Islamic Preaching

You do realise that in 6 months time that quote will be dug up and thrown at you in Speakers Corner by the usual suspect?

What Spawn has said jokingly others have said seriously - it would be better to quote another if anyone wanted such material...

I dont want to argue on this because this is the most sincere and decent thread we have had on religion in GD in a long, long time...

but when you mean 'with an open mind' dont you just mean with a mind to accept what you have presented.

No, I mean free your mind of everything you have heard in the media relating to Islam, and just learn from scratch. Without any preconceived ideas.

Still any faith that asks for its followers to eat a baby's placenta is kinda strange and weird but then these scientologists are a weird wacky bunch...harmless though thankfully :p:D

I dont think that a 'strange' practice is justification for calling them a 'weird wacky' bunch...

They are a weird wacky bunch because of the authority and psychological tactics they use against their followers, the unresolved deaths they are implicated in, their agenda to trademark their religious terms in devloping countries to legally protect their brand and charging people to join their religion...

I think the media is more a social study of Islam than a theological study. The media dont delve into Islamic theology (more to the pity) because western society has a very low threshold for information of philosophy that isn't associated with Western scientific method...

Pardom my ignorance on religion but what do animals have to do to get into Heaven? For example take a Snail, what do most religions say that it has to do to 'get into' heaven.

Bingo

All the snail has to do is exist and treat others as he would like to be treated. Same with all creatures. Man has made religion far too complicated.

Well in Islam there is a huge difference between a snail and man. There is a clear distinction between man and animal, in that man was created with knowledge. Man has the ability to make choices, and will be judged accordingly, but animals will not be judged.

Now you see, I thought animals were banned from Heaven.

I wasn't christened, and have no desire to be. I'm interested in religion though and am going to have a crack at reading the Koran over the summer.

However, this week I am mostly worshipping the pink unicorn (although I can't see her) :D

If you don't have an open mind and accept the TRUTH then your mind is closed. Its a very nice piece of circular logic

So you saying that Snails/Rabbits/Tigers have no knowledge? (Ok, maybe not of religion but they still have knowledge?? And they cannot make choices?

Animals won't be judged...lucky things :D:D

Man is above all animals in the sense that 'we' have been given intelligence, something that no other animal has been given.

edit: Saying that though, man is the only creature that denies the existance of God, according the Quran that is. Animals praise God in their own way, and are regarded as one of the signs of God.

"The heavens and the earth are full of proofs for the believers. Also in your creation, and the creation of all the animals, there are proofs for people who are certain." (45:3-4)

I agree with you on this, because I myself was born into a muslim family so I often wondered where I would have been had I been born into a christian family or a hindu family or an atheist family etc. It was this that led me to read into other religions, and try and understand more about my own religion instead of blindly following it.

The only thing I can encourage you or anyone to do, is try to ignore all the rubbish you hear day in day out in the media, and just read the Quran yourself, and then make up your own mind.

If they can praise god in their own way, cannot they have intelligence in their own way?

They could yes, but there is a limit to what animals are capable off. Humans have gone way beyond that limit, thats the thing which seperates us from animals. a lot of people like to believe that we evolved from animals, and are no different to them, but this idea is totally rejected in Islam.

Thats because as a muslim i had to nuke her from orbit and she was a waste of resources :p. Not only that the stardom went to her head :D

cheers for all the decent replies everyone, esp e36Adz. I have to say that I didnt think the way this guy at work was explaining it to me was a very good method.

I saw him again today and he was still pushing. He was feeling generous so I now have a free copy of the Koran (Quran?) with english translations next to the arabic. The guy works for the Sabic Oil company based in Saudi, and they throw a lot of money into their displays. I quite enjoy them, we get traditional arabic food, pens, and carp like that.

I got comments from people like "you should throw it away if you dont want it" or "burn it". I ended up arguing with them, as I personally think that its a crime to destroy any book, especially a holy book.

Not that I am ever planning to convert but it is a shame that Islam has been given such a negative portrait in the media.
