Just a quick question for you IT types out there,

If you delete all your temporary internet files/cookies and your browsing history off your computer. Is it possible for an IT dept to still view these at all?

Just i've been told that someone has seen a lewd image on my computer that was posted on a internet forum thread i unwittingly clicked on, and as a result i am having my internet browsing history searched.... :(

The server used to allow you access to the internet could have a log of every activity you do, regardless of your local machines cache and record.

If it was a genuine mistake then you have nothing to worry about (unless you shouldnt have been looking on a forum at work anyway). Trying to cover your tracks at this point would certainly make me suspicious.

Working in the IT dept certainly has its benefits, I find ;)

Well, i normally delete my temp internet files and browsing history every week or so to make my computer run more smoothly.

Im allowed on forums, but just during lunch hours.

I'm sure the IT Dept is more then aware of forums, and you state you do browse freindly forums, only takes one idiot to post a bad link.

Mind they can probably see this, hi guys \o

Set fire to the computer, the servers, the ISP servers, and the sites you visited servers, the building and yourself. It's the only way to remove it.

The thing is, that the internet is a crazy place, and links sometimes go to pages with questionable content.

What any business should really be doing is trying to establish a pattern of behaviour, and trying to understand whether such material is actively sought as opposed to sporadically and accidently subjected to, and whether the content is against the ToC of employment.

I heard of a guy at a rather large international organisation watching homoerotic pornography at on open desk / open office with the monitor facing the door, so that people who walked past saw him. He was literally escorted from the premises.

I wouldn't bother deleting anything. If they ask about something, just owe up and tell the truth in a tactful way. It's the IT department, if they can do their job, then there is nothing you can do to hide from them. (muhahahahahaha)

One or two lewd images in your cache isn't going to get you a bad reference when you leave. I doubt the IT department would even care enough to waste time going through your cache when it's obvious it was just one link.

If his IT Dept were any good they wouldn't let users have access to Internet Settings. But thats just one of the policies here anyway. There is NO way of deleting evidence then. :p

take a hammer to your hard rive mate, hit it repeatly and then put it back in and ring them saying its making some odd noise, can they come look at it..

hide the hammer...

Seriously though, if it s agood setup not only does it tell them what sites you have gone to on another server, where you can delete anything you want on your pc, it wont help, it will also so time spent viewing... this helps as if you gone to a dodgy web site for 2-3 secs.... or if oyu went to same website for 50 mins.... you see the point?

If in doubt, go to the IT guys and talk to them, take some choccie bics too, then they wont find anything :)
