IT helpdesk.

What sort of systems do you support?

Windows based systems. I'm responsible for 7 Offices. Hull, Leeds and Nottingham based. I work from home in Nottingham. Anything from imaging a laptop to building servers/hardware replacements.

I have no qualifications at all past A levels.

Jon.

If you don't mind me asking, what company is this with?

If you don't mind me asking, what company is this with?

Thats not really relevent, nor does it matter to me what 'type' of company I work for. I would suggest if you can getting a job in a small company to start with. Pay might be shocking, but thats 'your foot in the door'. :)

Ok, but thats not going to help me learn how to run a network.. there must be another way of doing it.

You can run multiple virtual machines on one PC so you can set up a domain/exchange org etc, you would just get some (read this as a lot! :)) performance slow downs. To be truthful you would be better placed getting a customer facing job (Supermarket, McD's, bar job etc) and get yourself on your feet.

Learn as much as you can about XP/Vista/office from books etc in your spare time and then apply for a 1st line job (Helpdesk). If they ask about relevant experience then you are dealing with lot's of differen't people in the job above, a lot of places aren't too fussed about previous 'industry' experience as you would get training on the job. From my own experience, the better call centre staff have come from a non-IT background but have experience in dealing with customers on a day to day basis.

As Jon Frost says, they are a very good way into the industry. I started 1st line, then 2nd line, 3rd line hardware, Field engineer, team leader, site leader then Ops manager and now onto ITIL/MSP stuff. Where did i come from? I left school with A levels, worked as a tree surgeon/landscaper for 4'ish yrs then as a butcher for another 4'ish years then into I.T.

For calling me a fruit loop. I don't talk to people who call me names. Now stop derailing the thread, I'd like to get back on topic.

You make your own luck, moaning about how bad your life is and how badly you have been treated in the past isn't going to change your life around. Why not get your chin up and stop making excuses?

Think that MSN log was quite useful to be honest, certainly clarified a few things in my mind :)

sr4470 - I have to wonder what you are doing round a mates sitting on the internet anyway. Go and get a job, go into your local town and apply there and then for every shop in the high street, and then go to the industrial part of town and ask every place if they have something going. You'll have a job almost straight away doing this.

Min wage will see approx £200 per week, ok not very much money but it is enough to rent a small flat with at least electricity(!) and decent conditions. Once this is sorted your motivation should rise. Then buy a load of cheap computers off ebay or ask mates for spare ones etc, ive probably got a couple of old machines you could have if you wanted and were at this stage where i thought you would actually use them.

Once you are confident in your windows skills then apply for a basic IT role, it will pay probably sub £15,000 but its a start and you can then progress onto "proper" money.

Its not hard dude, ive had nothing handed to me at all and i gross well over 3 times the average salary. Ive just got off my arse and earnt my money. :)

sr4470, Id take Jez's advice. Go get any job for now. If anything go work at purple shirt land and get some customer exposure if anything.

To get back on topic - Ace Modder, one my managers should be ringing you soon as Ive just had an email from her(early next week if she hasnt called you already). Let me know how you get on and if you need any pointers on anything.

Right, back on topic, i'm really looking to try and get into helpdesking/support myself, i've been building pc's and providing phone support, visiting to help them, giving 1 on 1 lessons, etc, but anything you seem to do on a self employed basis, may as well have not happened half the time!

It actually seems hard to find the IT Customer service stuff around leicester, ideal job would be a school techy which I did in early 2005 for a few months and really got on well with it, starting at HelpHire as a cer delivery agent on the 18th :( But really hoping I can get out of that asap and into something that i'm trained (Adv GNVQ and HND) in! :(

It depends how far really mate, not looking to move miles, but willing to commute a long way for a decent wage right now, as i'm still at home and have a big stupid loan and car finance to pay, and right now, I can't!

How about Birmingham? The IT managers here are recruiting for about 7 positions on the IT Service Desk along with a Team Leader and Manager role. I have submitted Ace Modders CV to them.

Let me know if youre interested.
