It just can't be possible or?

Good on you. You did the right thing. Although he should have asked how to do it, it was the companies job to make sure he was trained and peer reviewed at first. Wiring a plug seems simple to old farts like us but I can image how young people have never had to do it. It's just occurred to me that neither of my kids do. So I'll be showing them.
I'm 34 and I've wired multiple plugs around the house with no issues (yet:p), I've also changed most faceplates. I also changed a 3 phase contractor at work and that didn't go boom (and I'm a mechanical guy, not electrical). Not sure I'd class myself as a millennial though, as I think I'm too old and I'm not daft:D (for reference I work with a couple of guys who are mid to late 20s and they make me feel old:D.

Wasn't it due to the carnage why we now have pre wired plugs?

There are always idiots, no matter the generation
I remember at school when I was around 14 in one lesson we had to wire a plug and learn about ground, neutral, live. (90s)
I'm not sure what class might have been science or engineering/woodwork whatever

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they purposely showed the kids in a light that makes them seem more dumb than they appear when it comes to retro tech.

Every time I see these retro videos of kids not knowing what to do with something I think exactly the same.
They must film 1000 kids and pick the one who really was thick.
