IT Salaries

Also, and I might have missed it, location makes a big difference as does the company, and the size of company.

Was just about to say that - in Devon (as you probably know too), IT jobs are quite scarce, as are larger companies.

I started on about the same salary as the OP, that was in a public sector company. They put me through several qualifications and I got a few years experience before moving on elsewhere which nearly doubled my takehome.

If I was in London, I could probably be earning 50k+, but alas not here. Then again, my mortgage would be a bit more there!

I've been pretty much running my company's IT Help desk single handily for the past 18 months and I'm only on 16k, my bosses have actually just turned down my request of a pay rise (I wanted to go up to 20k)

It obviously varies from company to company (my bosses are obviously tight ********'s) but I certainly wouldn't say earning 16.5k and only being in the job 4 months is bad to be honest

In terms of my situation I'll be promptly handing my notice in within the next few weeks or so!

You are definitely underpaid in comparison, but you will always be dissapointed if you compare yourself to everyone else. If you're earning enough and gaining good experience (which it sounds like you are) then stick with it for a while and when you feel like you're no longer learning you can move on.

You're learning more than I am and I'm on a fair bit more, I'd rather be learning.....

Good Post :)

Its all swings and round abouts as you know.

I’ve been looking to move jobs for a few months now, just testing the water really to see what’s about. Unless you’re in Management, Contracting, Consultancy there are very few 50K + jobs around. However, the market is starting to pick up. I am personally hoping to finish off the qualifications i have started. That should give me the extra bit I need to get my foot in the door at a higher level when I start properly looking in the new year.

Is there a website where you can compare salaries for various jobs in IT?

I'm sure I've seen something like that before, but the only one's that I can turn up at the minute are ones that don't seem to have any averages under 35k!!

I graduated with a first in Comp Sci, just started my first job as a 'junior systems tester'. It's only 16k but it's local so atm I'm paying nothing on rent so it's not too bad. Just after the experience for now, after that I might be able to either move up in the company or move on. Just glad to get a job in this climate to be honest!

As long as you're comfortable financially and happy in your job then salaries don't matter!

If you want to earn serious money you need to stop fixing it, configuring it and teaching people how to use it and start getting them to buy it. ;)

There are a few about, but the IT sector has soo many variables i dont think most of them give a true reflection.

CWJobs is one i believe.

I'd say the best way to measure whether your salary is on bar is to talk to your friends in the same industry as long as they aren't porkie pie tellers that is. Wages differ massively and for all sorts of reasons. You can get over 35K+ starting salaries but the truth is the average is closer to 20k and with that there's a load of people on 16-19k. With 1st, 2nd or even 3rd line support jobs theres just tons of people qualified and with a bit of experience to do them, and at the other end of the market, even in this climate it's hard to find people with suitible skills too (good quality PhD grads with some experience for example are hard to source).

To be cuttingly honest I don't think 1st line support guys should be paid over 20k! But at the same time paying 11k is far far too low. As I see it (no offense lads) support jobs are pretty much the runt of the litter when it comes to IT jobs, and every dick roger and harry seems to have some sort of MCSE / CCNA type qualification these days.

I couldnt imagine anything worse than working in sales to be honest - doesnt seem like an IT job to me, especially given the level of IT knowledge I've seen from most sales people

My job title is just "IT Support", only had the job for a little over 2 months now but i do a wide variety of things. network support and general IT Support, Still pretty bottom line stuff. I'm on a starting wage of just under £18k

While I concur that most sales people are not the most technically gifted or come to think of it more often than not the most skilled at selling, the fact is that the top sales people in the IT industry are highly skilled and professional business people with a level of aptitude and ability to manage complex business challenges that very few IT technicians will ever be able to do. Because they don't know how to write code, debug technology or plug in and configure bits don't for one second think they are unskilled as the best are very talented and clever people.

Sitting in a major bank, working with the board members of that bank across the various divisions and articulating how you are going to improve the profitability of their business through technology innovation is very much working in IT, in fact it is very much at the forefront. Knowing how to deploy your knowledge skills is what good selling is all about as knowing everything at the high end is an impossibility. That fact a top sales person earns ¼ million upwards is not because it’s something a monkey could do, if that were the case they’d be paid £30K per year. ;)

Oh undoubtedly its a very skilled occupation, its just not one I can see myself enjoying.

I love the nitty gritty, designing, problem solving - actually delivering the things the salespeople promise ;)

My perception of sales jobs, especially at the lower end is of cold calling and things like that - I dont think I could do that, certainly not well.

Indeed. Thats ridiculous.

Jeez, I got that as a data entry monkey 7 years ago.

I would hope it improves a hell of a lot soon, otherwise I'd be out of there sharpish.

It is minimum wage yes but my old job was a lot worse at City Link and i had to get a job in IT some how. I'm ok with it for now as I'm getting courses paid for me and i do enjoy it. Even if it doesn't increase much in time it's a step on the IT ladder which will hopefully lead to better things.

The clever job is getting through all that to running the business and making everyone else do what you tell em, the role of "Shouty Bloke".

To be honest, i'd be happy with any of the wages being thrown around ;) . I have no experience and just want to start my career in IT. Have and A level in Computing, CompTIA A+ and am about half way through Network+(had to do something with myself to try to help look even worthwhile while i work part time at Sainsburys ;)).

Can't find any jobs around me (Northampton), but would work for peanuts, if it meant me starting in an IT role.:p

Meh.
