Hi Guys

Random question but my work is looking for people to work in IT support for the 50 or so stores in the UK and knowing that I know about IT have asked me.

Any1 got a rough idea what the general salaries are for IT support?

Thanks

Matt

Depends on the region and also the responsibilities.

If it's 1st Line Call Center monkey work you're probably talking between 13-15k.

2nd Line Call Center up to 19k.

If it's a small dedicated team you probably won't get anyone for under 21k performing both 1st and 2nd Line.

I imagine its more than just a first line of call, they currently have only 1 IT guy in the UK, and others are in the US and im sure it will be more of a partnership.

Thankyou for your reponse. really appreciated.

No problem, but as I said it's very hard to gauge without knowing the actual responsibilities or required skillset of the employees.

Apparently, the "average" IT support wage in the UK is circa 25k, but that's bull**** if you ask me.

Support covers a huge range of things from desktop phone support up to High end server/san stuff

as such salary range is massive £15k at one end to £70k+ at the other

That advert states the average salary in IT is over £35k pa IIRC.

True, but anyone in the industry knows that that figure is absolute claptrap. I cringe every time I see it. Oh, the fools that must spend thousands every year training in basic Windows 2k3 Server courses hoping to walk into a 30k job.

I thought the ads refer to £35k as being the average IT salary, covering the whole spectrum of IT in which case it is probably right

To be honest I think you're right there - but it's the way it's sold that's questionable.

The "IT" industry covers such a wide range of positions that it should really be "The average starting wage for what we train in IT is......"

certainly, they give the impression "take our course and earn £35k immediately" and we all know that ain't happening

Just noticed you're a fellow man in Notts so we both know what wages are like around here. :D

oh yes

fortunately I work for a multinational that pays the same in all areas of UK ( except London ) so I have the advantage of a national wage and cheap living

Fantastic! Unfortunately not so lucky here, so in a battle for new positions constantly. Can't seem to ever be comfortable!

If you're after someone to do 1st and 2nd line then the average where i'm from (East Anglia) is about 20k. I only mention East Anglia because i'm sure the average salary goes up/down dependant on location.

For me personally I started on 17 four years ago and i'm now on 21 basic but with overtime and on call it can go up to almost 35. I do 1st, 2nd and a little bit of 3rd depending on the subject.

Problem is when checking on job sites or a website with rough averages for IT Support salaries, IT Support is so varied that i've seen anything from 12k to 45k for jobs.

Ive found that in my area, techies are usually 12-15k, senior techies 16-18k, network managers 19-24k & strategic network managers, 24-27k.

Where is that? I do fairly basic second line wintel support and onsite support/maintenance and i earn more than any of those figures
