IT Support Salary

im doing IT Support and im on 16k in leeds/wakefield (west yorkshire) :( i do so much more then my job title but because of the economy i cant have a payrise at the minute.

Ive found that in my area, techies are usually 12-15k, senior techies 16-18k, network managers 19-24k & strategic network managers, 24-27k.

I am also in the north west, am currently doing 3rd Line and earn more than your strategic network managers on a 4 day week...

I'd hate to live in your area. Even in a school (and they pay a lot less than average) as a Network Manager I was on a fair bit more than 19-24K.

Here 1st/2nd line support is 20-24K with 3rd being more.

I'm up for doing my VCP and Windows 2008/Exchange 2007 MCTSP (or whatever the hell they are called) so should be up for an reasonable increase.

Also remember that I work in the Public Sector that pays less than the private sector. Works for me as my job is a hell of a lot more secure and I'll take a lower paid secure job over a higher paid job made of dreams at the moment.

Going back on topic I'd say 1st/2nd line support can have a massive salary range depending on the area from 9k () to around 24K assuming it isn't very specialised support of course!

We have one "support" guy, he earns just over £80k.

I doubt yours will be doing quite the same though.

Where abouts in the NW?

Although I don't work in support, I know roughly what they are paid around here. 1st line is 18K+ I believe.

Slightly OT - I've been doing IT support in Macs for a while with no training or qualifications! If I wanted to switch to doing PC's and splash some money on some sort of course/qualification what would you recommend I had a look at. Having a bit of trouble with getting a foot in the door and also because all the helpdesk work seems to have gone part time :(

Have a look at the MCDST qualification. Thats probably the best one to get for a starting job in PC support.

Its not a guarantee of work, but it might help you get past the paper sorting stage.

Support for enteprise environments is completely different to small business. As Rotty says it varies on a huge scale if you are using the term 'IT Support'.

I've seen people in Desktop Support teams earning 26-35k in large Enteprise environments and Server Teams 35-60k, not to mention Database Administrators, Network staff etc. These figures come from companies in the Midlands/Thames Valley.

It all boils down to the value you bring to a company. Support at any level in a small company with simple systems.. you can easily be replaced with a graduate.

Support in a large enterprise environment. Not so much and the business relies upon you more heavily. Especially those with a business as well as technical head.

Varies hugely... In our company, the desktop support guys probably get circa 20-25K, whereas senior product support engineers are probably on the good side of £60K :)

25K the Average IT Salary - Total B*******, its more like £18K. The average wage for 1st Line Support here is around 14K, 2nd Line 16-18K & 3rd Line 20K.

The advert states £37k and it's right. That takes into account the thousands doing 1st line at £13k all the way through to the few top level consultants earning £1m+.
It's an average, and shouldn't be taken as a salary expectation for the unqualified and unexperienced upon completion of a course.

I was on ~15K just last month, and I was doing two jobs on and off :p

Well I had two job titles, if there was a project, I'd be doing that...if there wasn't a project, I'd be testing the servers/workstations etc.

We had the micky taken out of us regarding pay anyway really...bleh.

Im on 17k a year and I manage all AD work, security work and IT project support...not to mention help out 1st/2nd and 3rd line support when they need to. Although Im in the NHS......

But those are just support jobs though. There's thousands of jobs in consultancy, project management, business analysis, any sort of very deep specialisation...if you want to earn good money in IT support is not the way to do it. If you work at a company that specialises in something you can advance quickly and maybe even branch out and start your own company, which is how you earn the megabucks.

I know a guy who earns £500 an hour doing emergency SAP consultancy. He lives near Newcastle and often is called down to London, he gets paid from the moment he leaves his house to the moment he gets home again. In a busy week he'll be earning at the same rate as a premiership footballer.

If you're after someone to do 1st and 2nd line then the average where i'm from (East Anglia) is about 20k. I only mention East Anglia because i'm sure the average salary goes up/down dependant on location.

For me personally I started on 17 four years ago and i'm now on 21 basic but with overtime and on call it can go up to almost 35. I do 1st, 2nd and a little bit of 3rd depending on the subject.

Problem is when checking on job sites or a website with rough averages for IT Support salaries, IT Support is so varied that i've seen anything from 12k to 45k for jobs.

Lies you told me you started on 10k 4 years ago...why lie on a forum! :p
