It was only a matter of time; Virgin Media start packet shaping

as they have just introduced this does this mean i now have valid grounds to cancel my service without incuring a charge? as i still have a fair few months remaining.

They may have made a cockup on their site:

They say M goes down to 1mb, this means it's halved.

They same L goes down to 2mb, this means it's halved.

They say XL goes down to 5mb, this means it's halved based the websites CURRENT XL which is 10mb.

I have a feeling 20mb will go down to 10mb/s it's just that they are basing their info on what's current on their site.

Yeah, in the grand scheme of things this announcement isn't that big a deal. I download the same things as DreXeL (I'm sure ;)) and I'm happy to queue my large downloads for over night. I actually see VM's throttling as a sensible alternative to monthly limits.

The only problem I have is that now VM have started with the throttling it's sure to go the same route as the rest i.e monthly caps.

I don't know why people are leaving over this, it's still infinately better than the traffic shaping imposed by most ADSL providers...........

it'll hit the lower tiers harder. Should be one limit for all tbh since the lower tiers are already dling it slower than the higher.

I only left due to us paying 25 for 4meg, when be is 24 for ~10meg. My parents pay, not me. I had no real say in the matter :P

please! you keep saying this, have fun whereever you've gone

Staying with VM means paying 25quid a month for 4meg. My parents dont want to keep this price to connection ratio, when they want to pay cheaper for a decent connection BE is a great alternative. (faster speeds for less money... and yes you can moan about it being "adsl so i wont be solid", but be said id get around 9meg, they always dumb it down to be safe, my mate lives same dist form an exchange, they quoted 9meg to him, hes on 15 or there abouts.)

I'm home untill sept, as long as its ok for that time im happy, my rents can then drop it to a 4gb usage pm, saving 10quid a month and still getting same speed as we will do.

BE support seems great, speeds are usually reported ok unless your 4+ km from exchange etc. I also get free connection and a free month, with possible more free months in the future.

It's all about money, in which I dont have a say about. Not everyone can afford 37 quid a month, some people have to drop back and afford what they can. And we can afford a pretty damn good service form a reputable company.

Good enough explanation?

I'm on the XL package, and to be honest I couldn't give a damn about shaping.

Just do any heavy downloading during the day

my connection slows to a crawl anyways between 7-12pm due to fact that everyone on my area seems to be on cable

so i switch to my bulldog connection until then (will be cancelled on the 11th)

All the people that are talking about leaving are the ones that are losing VM money. VM will probably be pleased to see them go!
