Italian Grand Prix 2010, Monza Circuit - Race 14/19

For Duke..

"F1 is one of the most exciting forms of motor sport to originate from Europe. The Italian Grand Prix being the most exciting of the European races. Do you know of the next exciting race, coming up?"

What was Webber on about in the race edit. Was it about Vettel finishing infront of him?

(And lets not forget the the fiasco that is Fisichella (but hes not on the current grid obviously)).
From that comment I can only assume you are judging Fisichella on his 5 races for Ferrari last year, which is incredibly short sighted.

Actually in fairness to me, Fisi wasnt a test driver in 2009 but driving a FI (and the Ferrari of course), which actually makes it worse since he has been racing in anger.

Ok its a new team for him etc etc, but... 5 races in which he CONSISTENTLY finished close to last/last, in a car which was capable of much more?

There have been instances of drivers switching teams in the past and performing much better than what Fisi did at Ferrari.

So no, I do not consider it short sighted considering Fisi is a seasoned F1 driver, he is racing in the pinacle of motorsport and is expected to perform as a driver of such a Formula. There are many people who would give their limbs to have been in Fisi's seat... and quite frankly could have done much better..

And lets face it... Fisi has not lit the pages of history alight now has he... he is of the same ilk as drivers such as Kovalainen... and ergo it wouldn't matter whether you were judging Fisichella based on his 5 races with Ferrari or his entire career. The fact of the matter is, he is average... at best.

I disagree.

When Heikki was in a race winning car, he was way way way off the pace and unable to win races in that race winning car.

When Fisi was in a race/championship winning car, he was competing well with Alonso and even won a few races.

At this point in time, I would rate Fisichella above Heikki.

So was Fisi. E.g.

2006:

1 Fernando Alonso Spanish Renault 134
4 Giancarlo Fisichella Italian Renault 72

Nearly half the number of points as Alonso.

2005:

1 Fernando Alonso Spanish Renault 133
5 Giancarlo Fisichella Italian Renault 58

Again less than half the number of points.

2008:
1 Lewis Hamilton British McLaren-Mercedes 98
7 Heikki Kovalainen Finnish McLaren-Mercedes 53
Less than half the number of points for Kovi Vs Hamilton.

2009:
5 Lewis Hamilton British McLaren-Mercedes 49
12 Heikki Kovalainen Finnish McLaren-Mercedes 22

Again, about half the number of points.
See the pattern :D ?

Now obviously points are one thing and race pace is another. And Im not going to sift through dozens of races to find out times etc, but I believe these results speak for themself. In a race winning car, both drivers have finished on a simlar points gap to their superior team mates (in this case Alonso and Hamilton).

Also:

... and unable to win races in that race winning car.

Kovi won one race in 2008, but didnt in 2009. But then Hamilton didnt either, due to the uncomeptitivness of the car.
(Fisi won one race in 2005 and one in 2006).
And with regards to competing well against Alonso... the points speak for themself really.

I'd rate Fisi above Heikki too. He got a Force India to 2nd position, when Heikki couldn't even get a McLaren on the podium.

... in the only race of the season where Force Indias are strong (i.e. Spa). And incidentally. the ONLY race he scored points at in the season.
Hell even this year the FI's were strong (and that's without Fisichella).

Also see my above post J!

Er Hamilton won two races in 2009....

Ah so he did :D
But that Mclaren was still a dog to drive, and that was partly the point I was trying to make.
Yeah, McLaren found some serious speed at the end of the season. Went from the back to the front of the pack in a couple of races.

I wouldnt say it was a front running car until towards the last 3rd of the season.
