That's what I'm wondering.

Given they are doing a 1 stop I'm guessing it's the softs that must be used. So Hamilton will take mediums. Rosberg will as well though, would be silly to take SS for 30 laps.

Of the three tires two are chosen as race tire of which you only have to use one. So lets say this is a medium/soft weekend, you have to use two of the three tires but only one of the mediums or soft. So either way by using two different tires you'll always be using the one you have to out of the two race tires.

Ferrari were losing time, Merc have far better tire life. Ferrari were also on the supersofts, the softs going longer isn't a surprise and starting on the supersoft was leaning towards a two stop anyway. They didn't fall for anything, they are on plan for the tire they started on. Also it was plainly clear that Ham's tires looked pretty meh. After several laps in clean air his tires dropped temp, cleaned up the surface and gained speed, nothing else.
