So if it's about the driver why wasn't people like Alonso or Vettel fighting for pole the car still makes a big difference

Whats your argument for Hamilton consistently beating his teammate then?

I'm not a 'fanboy' but I'm not blind to Hamilton's ability. You don't win several championships and hold the record for most poles by being less than impressive.

F2 cars are running around behind the safety car assessing the conditions.
This could be carnage. :D

But, it also helps clear the standing water.

While some drivers are great in the wet it's as much about the driving maps and drivability of the engine as it is anything else. No-one will pretend Ocon or Stroll are as good as Hamilton, yet both were comparatively quick today. Remember Hamilton and Bottas pitted for fresh wets too (I'm surprised no-one else did, especially the struggling Ferraris) which would have given them that bit more bite. Shame Bottas messed up.

As good as Hamilton is in the rain, he wasn't really 1.1s faster today.

As for the red flags, the issue is as much about the visibility as it is the lack of grip. Make better wet weather tyres and you will get more spray, so it would be red-flagged just as much as it has been. Didier Pironi nearly lost his legs in 1982 by crashing into Prost in the wet at Hockenheim - irrespective of how much safety has improved since, I have no desire to see a car cream into another at a far greater speed than Billy Monger suffered at Donington.

The bigger issue is the rules around the parc ferme regulations, where the points are awarded tomorrow, so you have to set the car up for tomorrow. Let them raise the cars and add downforce (remember how little they have at Monza) and the conditions might have been a bit more palatable. But if a car is aquaplaning at over 300kph in a straight line and having to lift off then it is too dangerous.

If you want to see red flags then the F2 is about to do a standing start in similar conditions...

De Vries is a nutcase, should get a penalty for that, whoever almost hit Leclerc just before De Vries hit him could also get a penalty, threw himself onto the track but didn't turn tight and hug the white line, he came a third of the way across the track and almost hit Leclerc who had to get off the power a bit, avoid him tuck in behind De Vries, still had better drive so started to go around while De Vries just decided to drive him off the track basically.

I've never liked Hamilton, never will. You just can't doubt the man's talent though. Yes, he's always been given a race winning machine (2013 excepted) but he's obviously pretty savvy otherwise he wouldn't have moved to Mercedes. That first season I remember him being lapped on several occasions. I've never known anyone divide opinions as much as him but just imagine if he'd stayed at McLaren

Right place, Right time, Right equipment... Cant blame a guy for making the right decisions through his career!
I'm a fan of the driver, not so much his lifestyle, but that shouldnt be a gauge of a drivers worth. Lets not beat around the bush, he a great driver, maybe not the best ever, but definitely up there amongst the top.
I genuinely dont understand the hatred that gets thrown his way, there seems to be a toxic section of F1 followers in this country who are bitter and seem to go out of their way to devalue and pick apart winners and focus on the negatives rather than praise the positives, its not an attractive trait.
Theres nobody on the current or past grid that i harbour any ill feeling towards, ok that maybe a stretch, i have cheered misfortunate events upon rosberg in the past when they happened, but he was a piece of work... but then i dont care enough to "hate" theres drivers that I like more and less but, I'll cheer on anyone and praise success where its due.

*cough* Hungary *cough*

Hamilton has been in F1 for 11 years and has won at least one race in each year. Only person with a longer streak than that is Schumacher.

I find it amazing that Hamilton has won a race in EVERY season he's competed in. You can say it's because of the car but the guy has the ability to pull performance out when it matters.

Anyway... F1 channel on YouTube has posted an Italian qualifying highlights video with no audio

You Ham fanboys are hilarious

Records can be read in many ways the truth is he has always been in big team and when he had that spell at Mclaren when the car was not the best he did nothing kept crashing and Button showed him up.

Merc car has destroyed the rest and he has been their from the beginning of them dominating (others did the hard work for him to just step into) it's the only reason he has broken records
Didn't realise anyone could fit so much butthurt into one reply.

Great laps by Hamilton, Ocon and Stroll. Haven't heard Vettels excuses yet but I'm sure he'll think of something. The race might actually be very good with the quicker drivers coming back through, rain depending of course.

Looking forward to it.

Schumacher was always in the best car too and Hamilton has achieved his pole result in fewer races. I assume you think that Schumacher wasn't any good either? Hamilton isn't always likeable, but he has some serious talent.

Just watched his pole lap. Wow.

Not sure if its been covered yet, but what is with the high pitched screeching of the cars going at speed? Haven't heard it before today.
To be fair the sounds of the cars in general were quite enhanced from the usual footage, lots of different noises we dont usually hear, but the whine from the transmission and ERS and the wooshing and hissing of the turbos were both very noticeable today, thought they sounded quite interesting.
