Schumacher was always in the best car too and Hamilton has achieved his pole result in fewer races. I assume you think that Schumacher wasn't any good either? Hamilton isn't always likeable, but he has some serious talent.

Just watched his pole lap. Wow.
Arguably Schumacher only had the best car in the 90s once (1995).

As above it was great to finally hear on the TV some of the interesting noises the car makes. It took longer than I thought after Bernie left (where many thought the engine sounds were deliberately crushed to heck as Bernie didn't like the V6s), but it's good that we're starting to hear them a bit more now. I hope it continues. :)

I think we are all set for Hamilton to suffer some relaiblity issues as its been a while since he has had some bad luck. I predict Hamilton will have to retire while leading comfortably allowing Vetell to cruise home in P2 and massively extend his Championship lead.

One way or the other I suspect reliability will decide yet another championship in the coming races.

Just caught the highlights there's nothing like a bit of rain to separate the wheat from the chaff, the engines make one hell of a weird whistle though I thought someone was setting those annoying fireworks off outside.

A while since has had bad luck? Headrest failure only a few races ago cost him a boatload of points. Some people have short memory.

I've never liked Hamilton, never will. You just can't doubt the man's talent though. Yes, he's always been given a race winning machine (2013 excepted) but he's obviously pretty savvy otherwise he wouldn't have moved to Mercedes. That first season I remember him being lapped on several occasions. I've never known anyone divide opinions as much as him but just imagine if he'd stayed at McLaren

You realise Hamiltons first season was 2007, where he came second in the world championship? He'd have won if it wasn't for a few mistakes and bad decisions from the team, such as leaving him out too long on worn out tyres in China.

I'd say 2002 is in there as well. 11 wins, 5 seconds and 1 third. That's pretty insane, even by Mercedes' high standard in recent years.

Not sure why people are still jumping all over me for praising Hamilton. You really can't please anyone here, can you.

It's opinion, but this whole Gilles "the fastest driver who ever lived". Oh dear God. He was brilliant to watch, but he wasn't the fastest in the 70s and he wasn't the fastest in the 80s. What he was was determined, flamboyant and probably more fun to watch than anyone before or since, but the legend of the hero gets greater each year, as do most legends.

Ronnie Peterson was faster (and better at drifting the cars of the 70s, though never made it to the turbo era), but he didn't have the same legendary character (read: he wasn't nuts). Senna was quicker and arguably just as nuts, but didn't have the same romance (and I don't think Senna was the best driver in F1 history either).

From a long-gone forum - a quote that has always stuck in my head:
Nigel Roebuck used to say maybe it was merciful Villeneuve died when he did because 82 was followed by the fuel economy years when racers had to throttle back and not race to conserve fuel. Roebuck always used to say that was anathema to someone like Gilles and he probably would have quit the sport rather than do "economy runs".

(see, the complaints of the modern era aren't so new and even hark back to what many believe is the pinnacle of the sport - more legend to a degree).

It's going to be interesting for a short while, seeing the speedtrap figures, to see which cars were running a dry low downforce setup during yesterday's qualifying.

I'm not normally a betting man, but I'd put money on Stroll and/or Ocon taking other cars out at turn 1 at the race start... I just hope these pick Vettel and not Hamilton. ;)
