It's All About Image

I couldn't care less about my image really.

Have a haircut about once every 3/4 years. Shave once every 2/3 weeks. Wear cheap clothes.

But I still think it's stupid that people have this whole 'manliness' thing going on, it's lame.

But £100 on clothes a week, WTF that's ridiculous.

What does it matter what peoples thoughts are with regards to image? I am me and couldn't care less what people think of me. I like to look good, wear nice clothes but still be manly! Do I have double standards?

I buy moisturiser, exfoliating scrub, etc... for my face, does that make me gay?
I spend £100 a week on clothes, does that make me a girl?
I get my hair cut twice a month and spend £18 on hair wax - does that make me vain?
I play golf and football - is that the manly side of me?

Given away by the fact you say you don't care what people think of you but you feel it necessary to groom and preen yourself to feed your ego, which by it's nature is driven by what you perceive to be other people's opinion of you.

Golf and football are hardly men's sports either... look at the current crop of premiership screaming primadonnas and the harsh reality of smacking a golf ball down an overgrown lawn and walking after it.

My favorite Tee Shirt & Shirts are pink and I love wearing them on a night out. Doesn't make me gay, does make me lots of men friends though! :p :D
The shirt i'm wearing atm has pink on it. I like it, it's one of my favourite shirts. I see nothing wrong with men drinking wine at a pub.

Everyone dresses/acts differently. Everyone has different attitudes, and some can't accept the way others are.

I care not what people perceive of me, nor do I have an ego. Your arguement is detrimental to an opinion you have formed of me via a single post.

You can "perceive" I like to feed my own ego by preening myself, how do you know I do not have a skin condition? Something I failed to mention in a post to entice posters like your goodself ;)

That's taking it a bit OTT imo.

Is that skin condition why you also get a haircut every two weeks and spend £5000 on clothes a year?

guys! chill!! What's with all the hostility??

The OP made a good point I thought, although not said in the clearest of manners I think everyone here knew what he was talking about, and as such sparked off this lively discussion until it became insults between a couple of members.

I think the main point he was making is the fact that SOME people do things not for themselves but to try and make other people perceive them as 'cool' or 'manly' or whatever. They do this to the detriment of doing things they enjoy. I know people who love computer games and love playing them but would NEVER been seen dead at a LAN event because it is seen to extremely geeky. I just think it is such a shame that people can't feel secure enough about themselves to just do thinks they enjoy and not worry about other peoples opinions, and I don't mean in a selfish way.

The drinking wine in the pub thread I thought showed this quite well, since a lot of members thought that it would be a little strange to do it and others thought that it doesn't matter what you do.

I am a super geek, work at an ISP and play games all the time. :p

But I still have an active social life and am able to get along well with non geeks quite well but I do try and explain that CS > football but they don't usually agree.

Clothes wise I just generally go to TK Maxx and cheapo places. I wear what I like rather than what is expensive or in fashion but try and keep to reasonably mainstream so I don't get laughed at 2 much. Been going for the retro stuff recently got myself some nice old Nike Tshirts and a couple of 2nd hand sports jackets at £3 each.

but then if I like some trainers I will pay upwards of £70 if I have to.

As for "manlyness", I am manly naturally in some ways, I am generally quite messy, drink beer etc like most real men but I don't no crap all about cars for example but don't worry about it or try to pretend cos although I am skinny I still have the manly attitude that if I really wanted or had to I could win a fight against anyone.

People actually drinking things because it's 'cooler' as opposed to favouring the taste, or people literally being told how to dress and the said person dressing like they're told to do so.

we see it everyday in all things. just look at the ipod craze, people buy them purely because of the image, rather than because they are the best thing available.

mad_allan - you seriously spend £5200 a year on clothes?
you must have a lot of free cash to be able to spend that sort of money on clothes alone.
how often do you actually wear the clothes you buy? i am guessing that you buy more for the label than the actual product?

I don't mind people doing or thinking what they want, what I do object to is people putting their opinions onto other people, whether it is taking the mick out of someone, pushing themselves above the crowd etc. Usually comes from low self esteem.
