In 2011 I had testicular cancer and as a result I have tests at the Royal Marsden every 3 months. One time when I was there waiting for radiotherapy I watched a woman approached by a nurse. It all happened fairly quickly and normally these conversations happen in a private room. But on this occasion it happened too quickly.
The woman was waiting for radio like myself but the nurse gave her some bad news; her latest scan showed that her tumour was too large to give her radio and her consultant wanted to discuss "other options" with her, presumably surgery or chemo. The women was visibly distraught and turned to the nurse - who she probably didn't know - and admitted in tears that she was so scared. This was in front of everyone and the nurse was so compassionate in listening and talking to her.
I feel privileged to have seen how EVERY SINGLE PERSON at the Marsden treats patients with such compassion and respect. You can hear it in the tone of voice they use and the words they use. This extends from the doctors to the nurses to the staff in the cafe to the cleaners... everyone. I've seen another side to humanity and am grateful for it.
So I would like you to consider the Royal Marsden for a donation. Not because of me but because of everyone in the future who may be there and scared and alone.
