It’s all kicking off in Bristol

I don't get it. Just arrest the people kicking off and stick them in a cell for the night. Bring in some admin staff in the morning to fine them all one after the other and continue life as normal.

It's a mostly peaceful protest just like the BLM ones were.

Is fighting for everyone's freedom not as important as black lives then? what's the point in fighting for black lives if they don't have freedom?

I wonder what your thoughts on the Capitol riots are.

That Ruptly video said that it is "funded in whole or in part by the Russian government".

Anything to do with the Russian gov't (or own own gov't for that matter) is to be taken with a pinch of salt! :p

It didn't play for me anyway. Just the spinning circle of death.

With peaceful protests becoming potentially illegal, I guess there's not much to distinguish between that and protesting non-peacefully, really.

What a bizarre point of view.

Standing there shouting = peaceful protest
Assaulting officers, burning vans, smashing windows = non peaceful protest

Comprende?

No opinion on the bill, but Bristol seems to be a huge magnet for these undesirable types, rivalled only by Brighton & parts of London, & I support the police in robustly dealing with them.

When either results in police violence, or legal charges, may as well make the most commotion, surely? It is a protest after all.

The broken police station windows, the burnt police vans, the officers injuries?

Order has now been restored. Unless you invent time travel you’re never going to be able to stop violence in any scenario. Using violence as an excuse to increase powers around protesting is a slippery slope...

It's not the government that wanted more power to deal with these violent protests, it was the Police. After the 2019 riots they went into a consultation phase with the government at the time was Theresa May as they wanted more tools to deal with situations like this, as they felt powerless during the Extinction Rebellion demonstrations at the start of the summer 2019.

A lot of the problems with these protests is that the genuine protestors are actually peaceful, but there’s a group who see every protest as an opportunity for violence.

Yep and they should be dealt with in a manor appropriate. This bill isn't banning your ability to protest, you can still do so, but if your little group gets roudy, loud and disrupts the public then they can act. How many thousands of people trying to get to work in London couldn't because roads were blocked by protesters or people had glued themselves to trains etc, that won't happen with this bill.
