It's funny how (fuel shortages)

Very few if any, petrol tanker work has always been at the very much higher end of HGV driving pay scale wise along with generally far fewer hours.

You’d really have to be a bit daft to swap one for the other.

Can’t help but agree with that, there was no such thing as an ADR when I was in the trucking game, just an HGV licence with various groups, I had a group 1, which covered all groups up to and including articulated vehicles, but oil companies would train you up if you weren’t familiar with loading or discharging oil, and all the tanker driving jobs I ever did paid bundles more than running about with either containers, or a curtain side trailer.

I'm genuinely interested if the fuel panic buying is a regional thing.

Anecdotally from having to drive a fair few miles over the past week, but it seems to be aligned with poverty/general scumminess of the area/location. Big queues at the nearest Asda, much less my local Shell :p

BBC breakfast were really pushing it last week because a handful of BP stations had trouble getting fuel, suddenly a few hours later it was carnage. 100% media driven.

Started on social media first. People were putting out pictures showing closed petrol stations due to no fuel and it snowballed from there once MSM media got hold of it. BBC reported it fairly at first, it was ITV who went all out with a petrol shortage that triggered the mass panic which then lead to lots of petrol stations running out and then the whole MSM reported it because it was then true.

Around Amazingstoke, it's dry.. I went into a closed tesco (navigated through some cones, i think it was some sort of test), and filled up the Mrs car using pay at pump, as I would not have got home on the fumes it had. Had to use two pumps, one spat out £1.25, and the other one managed to fill it up.

Went to all the stations around basingstoke at 11pm/onwards and it was totally impossible to get fuel really.

Its bonkers in brighton and beyond major roads are blocked everywhere by queueing traffic more than a dozen bus routes have either had to be cancelled or rerouoted as its impossible to get past the queues. Govt keeps saying its going to ease, its going to ease, we expect it to ease this week now its next week, FFS stop talking things down and get your finger out and do something about it! You talk about the army in reserve well what are you waiting for? Jesus.

Looks like most of the loony panic buyers are in remain voting areas.

What, so most of the drivers in the queues voted to remain?
Can’t see that, you might as well say only guys wearing blue shirts are panic buying.
I live in Southwark, where 72% voted to remain, as did I, but I waited until yesterday, then went to Tesco with my wife’s car on a quarter of a tank and got straight in and filled the tank, that’ll do her for at least 5 or 6 weeks.

Still see idiots driving at 60mph plus in 30/40mph zones. Obviously not bothered in their fuel consumption….

While agreeing with you that excessive speed is wrong, fuel consumption doesn’t bother me if I want to up my speed, and I’m talking about M-Ways, autobahns, and Interstates, not city streets.
I had a Lincoln Town Car rental once in the U.S., it had a moving band under the speedo, which showed you the car’s consumption, as you pushed harder on the gas it would drop back from 23-24 mpg right down to 14 or 15 mpg or lower.
With gas around $1.98 per gallon at the time, I ignored it and pushed harder.
Same with my wife’s car, one really hot day I had the a/c blasting and a friend said, “Do you realise what that’s doing to your fuel consumption?”
I said, “So should we be comfortable and I use a bit more petrol, or save £2 or £3 and have sweat dripping down our collars?””

No fuel issues here in Torbay all, few stations were closed last Sunday, but everything was back to normal by Monday. All stations are back to normal now, and as a delivery driver I spend most days driving around the south west.

Going faster doesn't increase your fuel consumption per mile...

I always thought that it did, but you seemed sure that it doesn’t, so I Googled and found this;

Motoring

Cut your speed, cut your petrol bill
Slowing down is the easiest way to cut your petrol bill, and coupled with some simple techniques you could save hundreds

There's a very simple way to save money on petrol: slow down. A car speeding at 80mph uses 10% more fuel than one cruising at 70mph, according to the Department for Transport.

And when i used to own a big petrol jeep I could get my readout to read 1mpg when i put my foot down. Doesnt make it good for the environment.
