It's snowing

I'm currently looking at replacing all my tyres on the car. They currently have 4 x snow tyres fitted but they are feeling very skitty on the roads currently. I'm starting to think the age of the tyres is the problem and hardening compound.
I don't know if I should just replace with more winters or go all season this time.
Depends where you are. Decent All seasons are fine for most the UK. If they are over 5 or 6 years old then they may be hardening up a bit. Check your tyre pressure too. If they are too high, it might make it skitty.

Aberdeenshire, about 8 miles from the centre of Aberdeen.
Tyre pressures are regularly checked. I think it's the age of them. Lots of wheel spinning in wet conditions. Thinking about it, I believe they may be older than that at possibly 8+ years...I suspect they are well past their best.
We generally get some bad winters. Currently dealing with 19" of snow which is mostly treated promptly on the main roads. The side streets are a bit of a nightmare.

I was away to order some cross climates 3's just now but needed to double check 235/40 18 will be fine on 18 x 8.5j. Currently they have 245/40 on them. 99.999% sure it's fine, just may have a very slight stretch.

That can be an issue, i.e. compromising their winter performance, with driving winter tyres outside of their optimal range i.e. during the summer - another reason why it is better to use all-seasons (if they will cope) than try and get away with winters for as much as possible to avoid going to the effort of changing wheels.

Should have a dot code on them which is week and year of manufacture. If they are 8 years then they will be well past their best. Cross climates are good, I run Continental AllSeasonContact 225/40 on my 18" 8J Megane wheels. Thats supposed to be 235/40 but the 225 are fine. Dont even notice the stretch.

You do realise its perfectly pratical to run all season tyres all year, or infact just the colder months? They are significantly better at any temperature below about 10 degrees and also much better in wet weather. Its not about what speed you drive at, its about stopping distances when a child runs out in front of you, or someone doesnt indicate at a roundabout. They arent just for snow, that would be snow chains ....

My all seasons have been supurb in the snow we've had for the last 2 days, infact no different to driving on normal roads. Much better and safer when you're dropping your 4 year old off at school, knowing you can stop if you need too.
Hagar was talking about winter tyres in the post you replied to, not all seasons.

Unless you live in a place that gets constant snow and ice, all seasons should be fine.

I generally did swap them each winter/summer but as I knew they were aging, I didn't bother the past summer as wanted to wear them down before buying new.

Yeah I've not got round to checking that date as of yet. I'm certain they are done for. I think for cross climates shall be ordered very soon.
235 should be just dandy. Cheers!

The funeral I was due to attend today was cancelled because of the snow and local events I was going to attend over the next two days have been cancelled.

Looking out the window, the tiny bit of snow we had yesterday and this morning is rapidly melting, could well be it for this winter... Snow in Hampshire is pretty rare and rarer still for it to stay around for 24+ hours.

Same here, the areas where there’s been snow for days suddenly disappeared, temperature has lifted above zero. Guess we’ll be getting rain after all. Going to be a horrible commute tomorrow.

All the snow pretty much gone now and it's steadily raining.
same here, it's chucking it down with rain, end of days style where I live. Also its warmed up a bit was actually in positive figures as I drove back from work today.

Where is this? Dry as a desert here. Wish we had a proper shower to flush all the crap off the roads.

on the North Herts - Mid Beds county border. Seems to have calmed down a bit now, but its still around 4c which is a massive improvement on yesterday where it was -4 at this time.

Proper icy on the backroads this morning, after the rain we had last night. Some roads like a litteral ice-rink!

Of course I had no problems, even on my summer tyres :D

Took my truck in for an MOT just now and the dealer's car park was sheet ice and slippery which was weird as it is 2-3C with the sun out and very few places around here have had ice - even most of the back roads have been clear of it for 1-2 days now.

This morning seemed far worse than Monday when it comes to things being slippery. I was like Bambi on ice walking the kids to school! Damn me for having such a high C of G

oddly I encountered 0 ice or slippery patches of snow

saw a lot of people on bicycles and scooters :S

saw one vide on youtube of cars struggling to get up a hill, sliding backwords etc and some guy on a bicycle comes up the road.. facepalm he got past them all fine but what a moron.
too stupid to realise if a 2ton car comes sliding into him he can;t get out the way and he will end up sliding with the car and get crushed on a curb or something if hes unlucky.

All gone here now (rained hard last night) but decided to stock up on rock salt as the most dangerous stretch of road recently has been out drive :P
