It's too hot :(

I had bought an portable air condition as my daughters room gets really hot when the sun is out during the summer (around 27c), windows open and fan blowing to create a draught. Doesn't do anything to bring the temperature down.
Just a shame it was damaged on delivery, bottom of the box all damaged and the castor wheels all smashed.
Seems mental to be looking at air conditioning in Aberdeen, I guess the joys of a top floor flat, never again...
At least it's cooler tonight and raining.

The problem I have is the window in my room opens very high up and opening it lets in hot air from the outside, which would cancel out the effect of the pipe cooling whats inside?

Someone a few pages back mentioned a perspex sheet they had affixed to their opening with the right size hole in it, that would fix that issue as long as the pipe reached.

I personally think people make too big a deal of this. I've never bothered with anything blocking the gap left in my window (and it's a big window, albeit quite low opening) and there's still a huge difference when the air con is on. The air can is kicking out quite a quantity of cold air, the air around the gap in the window is pretty still.. I've not got hot air coming back in or cold air flowing out...

We've moved and lost our fan - gutted! It was only a pedestal fan for about £25 but i'd kill for some moving air in my room right now!

I bought a cheap fan from screwfix about this time last year to put at the foot of my bed. I got so used to the breeze and background noise I’ve had it going every night since. So weird when I lie down in a room without one now!

You need a proper window kit. You have to seal the room or the warm outside air comes in and the unit makes no difference. Dangling a hose out isn't going to cool the room down (altho if you stand in front of it you'll feel like it does)

It doesn't really matter if you seal the window completely or not. It will still suck warm air in from somewhere, whether that’s from inside the house or back in through the window. If it’s sucking it in from say a hallway, it will have to come from outside the house somewhere.

The machine is constantly pumping air outside, it has to be replenished from somewhere. This is why split units and 2 hose machines are much more efficient, you can keep the cool air in the room intended.

You have to trust that the machine can cool the air faster than the warm air coming in is trying to heat it.

I think you are right @Matthew.M but you can be tactical with what window you have open. If the sun is beating down on the window you are pumping the hot air out of, you don't want it to draw in air from there. You might also want to keep the curtains closed too.

If you were able to open a window in a shaded part of the house, this would be a a few degrees cooler at least and aid keeping the room cool as possible.

Bring on the rain :D

Bloody wish it would it'll probably just be cloudy as usual.

Drape the curtain around the hose it forms a good enough seal to let it pump out faster than it seeps back in

Had a snail on my balcony for the last 3 days.

my balcony wall has one of those stupid metal coverings over the bricks to make it look better but turn it in to a death trap if there's a fire.

the snail had decided to attach it self to a shady part of this metal and hibernate.. I guess not realising it risked getting boiled alive in it's own shell, because the metal won't stay cool it will get red hot.

I really thought it was dead, I tried pouring water on it a few times to give it a better chance of survival.

rained last night and it's finally moved off somewhere else.

guess it had a lucky escape

Would have gone nice with a bit of garlic butter though

I can tell you this isn't the case. I've never used a window sealing kit and my air can makes a huge difference when on.

I'm freezing cold, wet through, and weary from wandering back and forth with buckets, redirecting flow from guttering and water butt overflows straight onto the not-so-parched garden. I've got the garden bin filling with water and... and I need to warm my hands up. It's way too cold, but it's wonderful! Well, unless you're one of the bedraggled looking fledglings hanging around the bird feeders. They need lots of extra food out at the moment.

Hopefully everyone (especially farmers) get some of this rain this weekend.

Salt water does a much better job

I did that to a slug on there once and I instantly felt like a horrible worthless human being deeply disgusted and ashamed of my actions :(

surprised the snail lived tbh though, I often spray a diluted bleach solution on the walls to kill the moss although not for some weeks.

right now there's a bee stuck on a spiders web right above my door :S (dead for many hours I'd guess)
I've seen those big horse fly things hit the webs before and buzz like crazy but manage to escape.

I guess bees are weak and being fluffy doesn't help them

I chuck my snails into farmers field hedge next door, I've read somewhere they make their way back, if I get really board I will put some paint marks on and test this theory, they go crazy for lillys, have one in a moat of water plus a copper strip around pot but the odd super snail still makes it
