It's too hot :(

I've just dug out my industrial fan for the first time ever

much more bearable.

I bought one of these from screwfix but it was way too loud so took it back today and swapped for their 16" stand mounted one. I was hoping that due to the large blades it might be quiet but it was unbelievably loud, even on the low setting.

The 16" one seems great so far. Currently positioned at my window pullung air into the room and its bliss.

cats only sweat through their paws too, probably why they are all in the air.

give him a dousing with the hose :P

I never knew that, that explains why she was laid like that for like 20 mins lol.

Car temp displays show the external temperature.

That they do, however they'll often still massively over read if the car has been sat in the sun rather than in the shade (of course, somewhat dependent on particular location on the car and it's susceptibility to soaking up the heat).

On the radio this morning it was saying that this was a bad idea, as it can cause all the warm blood in a body to rush to the centre, increasing the core temperature to possibly fatal levels in the elderly. Instead they suggested washing in tepid water and keep air moving by opening windows, fans etc.

It will cause peripheral vasoconstriction resulting in the heat being contained inside the bodies core and removing one of the main mechanisms for heat removal. This is the reason you don't fan someone, or take their clothes off, or sponge them with cool water if they are pyrexic.

Stanford Research

I can't find the Navy Seals video doing the same research.

But basically this does work,
I get really hot very quickly and cooling my hands gets me from literately dripping with sweat to feeling much more comfortable in about a minute.

Maybe the heat does stay in the core, but empirically it seems to do the opposite and I feel much cooler.

Try it, if you don't feel better then it doesn't work for you, carry on sweating.

since cats only sweat through their paws you have to watch out for them in extreme heat, if their body temp gets near 40c then they are at risk of heat stroke
Symptoms of a heat stroke in cats would be a lack of coordination, redness of the mucous membranes in the mouth and panting. Seizures are also possible

general advise is to help your cat by wetting your hands and stroking her since in hot weather cats clean their fur to try and cool down so she is likely doing a lot more pruning than usual an will probably thank you for giving a wet hand

I've always filled a sink with cold water and stuck both my arms up to the elbow in water.

a few mins and your blood feels nice and cool.

The only risk I'd imagine is if you already have signs of heat stroke? if your just a little hot then it's not going to do harm?

Had the climate set to 19c in the car, it was lovely and cool. When I got home and got out the car the heat hit me like a brick wall :D It's bloody lovely though!

That works because that is cooling core vessels not peripheral vessels. Doing what you suggest will cool peripheral only. Look it up it's basic anatomy and physiology what you suggest and what they suggest there are working on different parts of the vascular system. They are directly cooling large vein, venules, arterioles and arteries along with capillaries. What you suggest will only act on capillaries. But feel free to do whatever makes you happiest. For me I'd rather just have another beer and slap another Cajun steak on the BBQ.

Or when you are getting off a plane nice and cool for hours then the doors open and the heat hits you.

Did that years ago on a lads holiday with my brother. Made the mistake of cracking into the whiskey duty free we'd bought before getting on the plane. Got off the plane into the midday heat of Cyprus and then had a two hour bus ride to our hotel.

It was ****ing horrific.

Oh my god the Northern line was so bad this evening...

Got home and it's hardly any better. 34 degrees at 19:25 FFS. Not even like the Sun's out it's just hot and muggy.
