I've Got Someone Sacked .....

Man I really hate people like you. Why tell on people? It's the lowest thing you can do to someone.

If it were me loosing my job id do him over, however you gotta think that the guy was gonna be operating heavy machinery......

Would you rather his post started ...got someone killed at work today, I knew the machine op was wrecked but I never told anyone and he passed out and killed 3 people???

When its putting peoples lives at risk then honestly its the only thing he could do!

Who's to say the guy would have been sensible over the verbal warning and learnt? Whats stopping him coming in like that a few days/weeks later but no one stopping him do it that week and he causes a massive accident. Whats to say the guy has a drinking problem and now has to confront it after loosing his job because of it?

Its not like when you are 6 or 7 at school and "telling on people" its real life and being an adult calls for not turning up to work drunk, especially when your work requires operating machinery that if used incorrectly could kill!

The OP has done the right and adult thing by following the management structure in the office and taken the right decision when something serious could happen and should never think otherwise!

You're not going to get him his job back without lying and even then you don't want to go down that route.

You made a poor choice. It happens :(

Or maybe to stopped 1 person getting killed and his work mate getting 3 years inside???

HEY IT'S A LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR ALL PARTIES INVOLVED!

Don't hate on Albert because of what he had done. It's just how it played out, he was on the spot when the fella told him he was drunk, and to be fair, the guy who had a few lagers should have known better, especially talking to a senior...

I think all parties learnt something from this.

If you really think the guy was a hard worker then try to get him back on somehow, with as few hard feelings as possible. But I've no clue if that's doable.

...and i feel terrible about it. I hate playing good cop , bad cop

I'm a Team Leader at work and pick up a workmate on my way to work. On the way there he told me he'd had 4 cans of lager a couple of hours previous. As he drives machinery at work i told my supervisor what he'd said in the car. Subsequently the lad was taken to office and then walked off site. He had worked with me for a year and a half.

I know i did the right thing by telling my supervisor but i can't help thinking how i could have handled it differently so the lad would have kept his job. To make matters worse he was one of my best workers, knew every job and more and was always talking about trying for promotion. Also he's just bought a house and is paying for a holiday for early next year. This keeps going around and around in my head.

I'm not paid enough for this :( and my head is buzzing ......

It's ok, I've sacked loads of people and I can tell you now it's never nice, ever. And if anyone enjoys doing it, they need a baseball bat in the face for being such a heartless ****.

However, from your post I think you done the right thing in that instance. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time .. or something like that. I mean, he REALLY must be an utter moron for doing something so irresponsible, especially with this job role. If you're a cleaner, fine, you won't do much harm, but in a role like that, I want my people 1000% clearheaded with NOTHING unnecessary floating around their bloodstream, most of all alcohol.

Anyway, what I would've done is to send him home even before allowing him to get to work. But for what occurred, you done the right thing, not the nice thing, but the right thing.

Seems harsh to fire someone just like that can you be sure he had four cans? maybe he was exaggerating. ; Did his breath smell of alcohol? have you noticed anything before? I'd try get him his job back.

Then again if they do rehire him imagine how uncomfortable it will be. lol

If it was lager and he had *just* finished them, he would probably be over the drink driving limit, no? By any means, too intoxicated to operate heavy machinery :/

Oh my :(... Absolutely terrible thing to do man :(

You pick him up and take him to work in your car? Surely you had some sort of relationship with him? Why didn't you take matters into your own hands and try to talk him out of going to work? You're the Team Leader for goodness sake!

There was absolutely no need to snitch to the next man in the hierarchy.

some of the engineering firms ive worked for over the years, theres been a zero tolerance approach to drink ( or drugs for that matter ), it's normally in your contract, summary dismissal if your under the influence, & ive seen it done, sacked on the spot & down the road, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

Yep, same in my industry. Problem is that you still get some buffoons suffering momentarily brain-fits where they roll the dice to risk job and home. It really isn't nice but sometimes examples needs to be made of.

i agree 100%,Yes i know the guy should not have been drinking before going to work, but a lot of people can drink quite a lot and have no ill effects because they have got use to it...may sound daft but its true.

But no way, albert you should not have grassed on him.

It's in our contract

oh come on man,Your sounding just like our bloody supervisors at work....work and all their guidelines gone to their heads. :D

Rightfully so. There is no sympathy from me, if you want to take consolation from all of this then accept that you may have prevented an accident had he continued to work.

But as a friend I would have told him to call in sick.

Then you should have taken him straight back home to sort himself out imo.

I don't even know why the OP didn't think of this, being a friend and all.

OP didn't say he was drunk, it was 4 cans and it was hours before work - however, still wrong. Since the OP was a friend, it could have been handled much better. It isn't a learning experience, its common sense to me.

Maybe you could have handled it differently, that's what hindsight is for.

Ultimately you did choose one of the right options, your workplace is safer for it. If he cared so much about his house/holiday he wouldn't have been taking such a stupid risk.

To the people saying "omg wut a grass u suck", I hope you're never put in a position of any responsibility.

Don't beat yourself up about it, he's probably going to hunt you down and do that for you. :p
