I've Had Enough!

Don't smoke myself, but I thought I'd post this in the hope it will stop someone here from smoking.

One of my Mum & Dad's best friends & I'm friends with him too (who's been smoking at least 40 a day since he was 9 & now in his early 70's) had been diagnosed with liver & lung Cancer. Doctors have said its down to the smoking & wont say if there is any more hope for him. They have said they'll treat him but the prospects aren't good. I'd say he's got months to live. He's scared stiff & is bursting into tears at random.
In February last year he died in a lot of pain (the Macmillan nurses were giving him morphine at the end)

After hearing this I can honestly say it would put me off smoking for life if I did smoke, I'm glad I don't & none of my immediate family don't either.

Don't quote me on this, but doesn't it screw up the tadpoles and make them do a homer?

Gilly how can smoking be great? Its like saying "oh look a speeding train, lets park my car in front and see what happens"

It does, but I doubt that smoking a few cigarettes on a night out will mean I can never ever have children!

Sorry to hear about your friend, but smoking 40 a day since he was 9...kind of inevitable to get cancer. But then also, the average lifespan is only just over 70, so to smoke 40 a day since he was 9 he's done bloody well!

Unfortunately this is all too-commonplace and will do nothing to put off smokers. This is the thing with smoking, some people just won't see until it's beyond too late. I'm sorry for your loss.

My father is the same, he started smoking at an early age, 10 or so. He's 56 now, and I'm pretty much dreading the time when they say to him, you've got cancer you're on the way out. Absolutely dreading it.

To be fair if he really has smoked that many a day since being the age of 9, he's done bloody well to get into his 70s.

I'd say, in that example, he was 70, so he pretty much made it to the same point as a non-smoker, so it doesn't make a difference!?

He could have lived to 80, 90, maybe even 100.... who knows?

Yes, but the marginal difference is pretty small, and one of the main arguments against smoking is the health one, i.e. you'll die young. And smokers often live to 80/90 etc. 70 is a good innings by anyone's measure.

It's not when. It's about how.

It's not a nice way to go.

People always talk about a "good innings". A gunshot is like being clean bowled by Jeff "Thommo" Thomson. A smoker's death is like narrowly avoiding hitting your own stumps from a Shane Warne delivery before choosing to go for a risky single and Matthew Hoggard tripping you up as you run past him. Then, to rub it in (whilst you are still on the ground and not sure about whether you will get up in time), Ricky Ponting picks up the ball and casually walks to the stumps and as you are crossing the line he knocks the bails off. More uncertainty ensues as it goes to the 3rd umpire. You were run out.

Depends on the situation. For one:

In February last year he died in a lot of pain (the Macmillan nurses were giving him morphine at the end)

Surely that's contradictory? He won't have any pain if he's on morphine!

You're right - he was in a lot of pain before he died, I saw him a couple of days before & he was in absolute agony (everytime he coughed, which was often) & the Macmillan Nurses came in the day after (the day before he died) & gave him morphine to relieve the pain. He didn't know anyone after that - not even his own wife. apologies if I caused any confusion, I just didn't explain it properly.
It was a sad day when he died, he was a kind cheerful & funny man who would do almost anything for anyone & worked hard for his local Lions club, who I'm a member of. :(

Towards the end of November i was mid-way through a ciggie and just thought "Skrew this they taste horrid and everytime i breath in deep or laugh i cough my guts up! I Quit!" Stubbed out the remainder of my ciggie and gave all my ciggies away to my friend. I went from 30 a day to 0 a day and havnt looked back! It takes about 1-2 weeks for the really bad cravings to go away. I found that replacing the ciggie with a cup of tea really helped. If you want my advice steer clear of patches etc... as they only prolong the dependancy on nicotine. Its been 5 weeks since and i can honestly say i have only smoked twice and both times tasted like i was sucking on burning coal. It was sick and i wont be smoking ever again!

No drugs talk

Disappointed in myself. I think I'm gonna have to slowly ween myself off of Nictotine. I thought I was stronger than this, but I was going insane. :(
