Discussion in the Model 3 thread was getting a bit off topic...

I have had a chance to look at the offer from Jag with a bit more depth now.

What I Like:

The car looks great from the outside.
Interior looks nice, pretty 'conventional' for an EV but should be decent quality from Jag. It can be specced up to far nicer than a Tesla for sure.
Performance

What I have concerns over:
Charging - the advertised 100kw charging is very much a read herring in the UK at the moment. The reality of it is there are hardly any CCS chargers and they are all 50Kw. There is only 1 CCS plug at the majority of service stations and charging locations and it is always a CCS+CHADeMO combo unit, so if someone has their Leaf on it your stuck. Those Ecotricty CCS units are also very un-reliable (just check Zap Map). This will improve over time.

Range/Efficiency - it has a great headline figure of a 90Kw/h battery pack and '298 Miles' WLTP range. We know its using larger 'laptop' type cells like a Leaf VS the cylindrical type cells in a Tesla. It's difficult to compare to a Model X because that is measured in EPA and NDEC. Now its rumoured to have an EPA range of just 220 miles. But EPA range is achievable in 'normal' driving conditions. For me that seems really poor efficiency, the Model X which is a much bigger car gets 237 on a 75Kw/hour pack and 295 on the 100Kw/hour pack. With that size of pack I would have espected to see something like 260 miles EPA range. You are looking at 400W/hour per mile vs closer to 290W/hour per mile in a Model X. As I say this is very much an estimate at this time but it's not encouraging.

What I don't like:
As with most premium car brands pretty much everything is an option. The top model doesn't even have front fog lights on a £75k car. The starting price is a bit of a red herring, the car they had on stage and is pictured would be roughly £85k.

And now for my rant about the 'launch event'....

What the hell was that?
They spend an hour talking about the I-Pace and didn't actually tell us anything about the car. It seemed to be aimed at a group of people that generally speaking don't buy Jags nor can afford them.

What I took away from it was:
The car looks nice on the outside but they hardly showed the interior.
Jack Whitehall can't drive.
iJustine is American so can't say Jaguar correctly.
No one from Jaguar actually wanted to talk much about the car which is really odd.
No details or pricing discussed.

It just seemed to miss the mark completely.

Using iJustine because of her name was a bit of an odd choice. I have got nothing against iJustine, a lot of her content is genuinely hilarious but while she is an 'influencer' most of her audience is teenage girls or early twenties females and non of it is about cars. Not many people actually know who she is.... none of them that watch her content actually buy Jag's.

The whole I-Pace VS Model X race was just cringe. Well done they managed to show that a car with a 0-60 of 4.5 is faster than a car with a 0-60 of 4.9 and 4.7, Bravo! They even did the whole 'bait and switch' thing where they said they were bringing out a P100D but just bought out a 100D, we all know a P100D would smoke an I-Pace. It was something you would expect to see from a double glazing advert not from a premium brand like Jaguar. That really annoyed me.

Did anyone else notice the car started charging at 20%?

I would have much rather seen it been presented by someone from Jaguar who had a bit of charisma about them to drum up genuine interest in the car rather than Jack Whitehall cracking **** jokes. Millions watched Elon Musk blubber his way through his Model 3 and Semi events and his public speaking is really not great but he is genuinely passionate about what he is talking about so people listen. Jack Whitehall doesn't even drive.....

I think Ian Callum came across well though and I will never understand marketing logic.

The only people watching that launch are already interested in the car, they don’t need the bread and butter stuff - save that for the 6th at Geneva.

No V8, it’s about the appeal to Generation Y and they had the presenter from brits the week before. Maybe the computer forum was always gonna miss the point?

The standard £63k car doesn't have fog lights (£200) or a powered boot (£400) as standard.

It looks good and has plenty of room. What is the infotainment like - is it the typical JLR touch laggy experience (TLE)?

Did you see the lag when he was using the infotainment system? That really doesnt look good....

1:10 - 1:50 in the video above.

Yep its definitely laggy. Having had an XF and then an XJ I loved both cars and the overall experience of the cars was fantastic but the one area which they consistantly fall way behind on is the infotainment which is a real shame.

Looks great. Very stylish inside and out. Range is plenty acceptable, even at 240/220 miles EPA. Performance is brilliant, without doubt (on paper).

Biggest bugbear is the price. There were rumours this would be debuting at around £50k. It's ended up being £63,495 (is this with the government grant? I'm presuming so). The standard 18" wheels are a bit crummy on a car like this, nothing like the 20" wheels on the higher models (and which have been shown in all the press shots).

Was hoping it would start the trickle down of technology to a more affordable level, but it looks like this is once again some way off.

Agree regarding price, it has the right sort of dimensions for us to consider it (decent sized boot in a not massively long car) but £60k feels too much. Might be worth looking at in a few years given how much many EVs depreciate (e.g. hopefully get a decent specced one for 20-odd grand) and hopefully better charging network available, but then again, by 2021 presumably there will be much more competition.

I think it's just made most of the Teslas pointless tbh. Tesla cost more but don't really offer more.

But yea, EVs are still way to expensive and depreciate very fast because of unknown out-of-warranty risks. Wait a few years and get one for 1/4 the price.

Model X starts at £70,500, but the styling inside and out isn't a patch on the Jag. Think the range is actually less on the entry level Model X, too.

Yep theres nothing in it, just an oversized ipad glued to the dash. Which is just as annoying to use as every other touchscreen when driving along.

Which model did you drive? How long did you have it for? How did you find the rest of the car?

Tesla residuals seem to be pretty good from what I've seen, so don't think we'll be getting any bargains with used I-Paces. Warranties are pretty good, 8-year/100,000 miles on the batteries.

EV depreciation has never been anything unusual, with the exception of two heavily discounted models; the Leaf and the Zoe. When new car, the value of a used one is going to take a substantial hit. That's not happening so much now though. The silly discounts are less common, and used values have gone up a bit over the past year.

The chance of a used bargain I-Pace seems slim. To be honest, I would expect the opposite; that it will depreciate slower than an equivalent petrol or diesel. Decent range, decent battery warranty, very cheap to run. It'll be a desirable used buy.

Regardless of the powertrain, I think this is a handsome and interesting looking car. But what is it? Looks like a large hatchback, but I didn't think Jaguar were really into that segment. Doesn't look like an SUV.

Have you ever driven a Tesla ? My S100D is my daily driver and it’s the best infotainment system I’ve used and I’ve had many cars over the years in my 8 years driving.

Doesn't make using a touch screen on the move any easier :/

They centralized everything on that instead of physical buttons, which is annoying. Jag haven't done that which is a plus.

It’s very easy to use when driving in my opinion anyway, I’ve found it easier than iDrive.

The only thing that is hard to do is search for a song on Spotify or enter a navigation route, but the built in voice recognition system does that easily (but that’s to do on any system while driving )
