January Transfer Window

Newcastle are lining up a move for Porto defender Bruno Alves, with Sam Allardyce watching him in action against Liverpool in midweek.

Is Alves the man to sort out Newcastle's defensive problems?

I doubt it :p and what about the creativity problems viduka - martins got no service in the last game and we seem to have a midfield that cant pass or cross the ball and hardly any shots , a midfield playmaker would be nice but that wont happen , probably sign some guy that will run around like a headless chicken with no quality .

With Defoe's contract expiring in the summer, I wouldn't mind seeing Arsenal negotiating a Bosman transfer in January. I'm not his biggest fan (he's more a scorer of great goals than a great goalscorer) but could prove a useful backup player next season. IIRC he supported Arsenal as a boy.

I meant he's wasted on the bench at Spurs, i think he'd get them a lot of goals if he got some games. Once RvP is fit Defoe would be in competition with Adebayor, again if he got a run under his belt i don't see why he couldn't get a fair few games.

I dont rate Defoe at all to be honest - I hope Man Utd avoid him, I would even prefer the whinging frenchman @ Bolton to him.

How many midfielders does a team need for gawd's sake - Ok so it might see the end of Fletcher's career at Man Utd, but thats about it (and I would feel sorry for Carrick who I think deserves a run of games, but would be unlikely to get them if we bought this guy)

I dont think we can have any more players in that position.
we should be looking at a midfielder to cover for Anderson when he is tired/injured not for someone else to sit in front of the defenders.

Don't see why we remotely need Veloso so its a strange one for me.

Carrick
Fletcher
O'Shea
Hargreaves
Scholes
Anderson

Whats the need for another? Fair enough he may up the quality of our squad but if we're gonna go and spend 15m on him I'd rather the money be put towards a striker/RB. I would love to see us get a RB version of Evra.

Scholes,Carrick, Fletcher, Hargreaves and Viv are the only ones i consider midfielders, O'**** is a liability in MF most of the time, Veloso would bolster the MF for the rest of the season

If Carrick or Hargreaves are injured we dont have anyone to sit in front of the back 4

Veloso would be perfect for when it starts to get messy halfway through the season
