Japanese or German?

German cars without a doubt, my Audi is almost 5 years old and looks as good as new. Jap car's are plain and boring, only a very few models interest me such as an EVO or NSX. The rest of the rice burners are just......dull.

If performance is your bag, Jap, definately. Much more bang per buck.

If you were in the market for a bit of luxury though it would be German.

For me though, it'll be Jap every time.

I find a lot of Japanese cars, the plastics inside (general trim) just makes me want to say 'EUROPE' to the nearest toilet!

Some late 80's/early 90's Jap cars were horrid inside.

Generally much better now though.

I find this weird. All the places in the world and the best cars come from the 2 countrys that we were at war with in WW2.

Anyone else find that strange?

A few thoughts:
- What's most clever, having a really fast car by throwing hp and money at it, or creating something that costs half the amount, weighs less and does most of what the first vehicle does?
- The Germans impress us with their "high perceived quality", i.e. great interiors, then usually get outperformed in real reliability by their Japanese counterparts.
- When you ask "which do you prefer" are you assuming we're talking about buying a car in England or Japan? Bear in mind that we're not far from Germany, so don't pay too much to import a German car. Go to Japan and ask that, you'll find that German cars cost more, with Japanese cars costing 1/3rd less on average.
- Whilst we're brand snobs in the UK, the Americans of all people seem to base their buying decisions on more practical matters, so are we surprised that the Camry is their top selling saloon, and Lexus were very successful?
- When you think of a nutter saloon on the cheap, don't you think of an Impreza automatically? Especially as they can be bought new for £16k. What kind of Golf could you get for that?
- Just remember that we only see a fraction of all the different cars that are actually sold in Japan. e.g. the FTO, Skyline, Soarer, none of which were available in Europe for years as anything more than a grey import. What other oddities have they got up their sleaves which are killer cars?
- Top selling roadster of all time, MX5. Infact without the MX5, we probably wouldn't have the number of soft tops on the road that now exist. The MX5 is what inspired the Z3, SLK etc. Without the SLK, the 206cc et all wouldn't have come to light (OK, maybe that's a mark against the Japanese then).
- Attractive? Check the old RX7, NSX and so on. Just think of what a mess Chris Mangle has done to BMWs. What did Merc and Audi do? They followed with some equally ghastly results. At least the Lexus still retain a semblance of class.
- Fancy playing in the D1 series. Why are almost all of their cars Japanese?
- Who introduced working practices like Kaizen and JIT and then introduced car manufacturing back into the UK with Nissan, Honda and Toyota? In comparison, the Germans allowed Rover to go down the pan and are moving more and more of Bentley and Rolls design and manufacturing to Germany. Yes, they are assembled in the UK, but where are the engines made?
- Lastly, how many German cars have I owned: 1 BMW and 3 VWs. In comparison 2 Toyotas, 1 Mazda and 1 Nissan. Breakdowns or serious issues with my Japanese cars, ZERO. With the Germans, well I've forgotten how many.
The result, I now drive a Mazda, my sister has a Toyota and my mother owns a Honda.

Just to finish it off, I love Japanese girls, never really rated German girls.

No clues as to who's work I respect the most.

Im gonna have to stick with what Ive got - German.

For me there are very few Jap cars atm that have that 'IT' factor that makes me like cars whereas there are a fair few german cars.

Saying all that I wouldnt go as far to say as the other country makes rubbish cars, Hell i'm looking at going back to a jap car for my next one to get a bit more raw power.

Imo Japan = Power (easy to get etc..) German = Refinement

I've always driven cars from Japan. Mostly Nissan's, but changed to Honda a few years back. Never had a German car, but I've heard good and bad.

I like the Honda brand, but someone at work has a toyota, and been nothing but problems, and very costly. Whereas the Honda's have always been well received.

Nissan cars are good, but I don't like the newer style's, although the 350Z and Skyline R34 V-Spec or Z Tune are just awesome looking, but they are not everyday cars.. You buy them as you have the money..

I've got a Honda Accord 2.0 iv-tec Sport, and I've been happy with it. Nearly had to sell it, but I think I've got it covered now. I'd missed her that is for sure, its been a great motor, and I've not spent anything other then service costs on her...

I can recommend a Honda, but then I would wouldn't I. As I have one, but it up to you really.. Buy what "you" think you'd llike. As long as the reviews check out, and you like it, then it's all good..

Why isnt Italy in there?
Ferarri or Mazerati anyone?

Edit: Cant forget laboginis

Hmmm, on a budget I'd go Japanese. Money no object and Italian all the way.

But that's getting off-topic :p

Jap if bang for buck is the need. German if you're spending over 30k cos you ain't gonna find much Jap up there

The Germans definately make good barges but they dont do sporty well at all and are mostly stodgy and uninteresting to drive unless you start to fork out serious money.

Japanese cars are generally cheaper and more fun IMO and are better in terms of quality of build (reliability) but not in the quality or design of interiors.
