Jenson Button wants to sign a one-year contract with McLaren for 2012 rather than a long-term deal so he can keep the door open to a potential Ferrari drive in 2013. Fernando Alonso is said to be keen on having the 2009 world champion as a future team-mate.

:o I can actualy see it happening y'know!

best start learning some Italian and get to grips with mingling with the Tifosi!

The text is in Brazilian so I've translated to save you all the hassle :)

Friends, this is the text of my column this Monday in the Jornal da Tarde

Jenson Button has not renewed his contract with McLaren. As I learned in Monza, there is interest on both sides of the extension of the commitment and the factor that was also preventing the final settlement is not financial, but only time spent in the McLaren.

The 2009 world champion wants, contrary to what one might suppose, only a one year contract, or fellowship with Lewis Hamilton, who has a good working relationship in 2012. Just. Since Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren team principal, wants to have this powerful rider, third in the standings with 167 points in front of 158 Hamilton, fifth in the team for three years.

The question that remains is in the air: why, in principle, Button will not accept the proposal from McLaren? After all, will play the next World Cup in 32 years (his birthday Jan. 19), is no longer a young man receives a salary that few teams could pay (estimated to be $ 12 million per year) and the structure of the McLaren is among the best in Formula 1.

The answer is simple: Button interest to Ferrari. And the Ferrari interests Button.

Felipe Massa has a contract with Ferrari for 2012. And only. Massa needs a supertemporada, next year, to convince Ferrari to be worth extending their commitment. Whenever possible, of course, but it's not what history suggests the last two championships.

Button has the desired profile of the driver for Ferrari. Fast, capable of living with a partner Sly as Fernando Alonso, and retrospective high regularity among the first. More: he has the backing of Alonso. Often Spanish praises British driver for McLaren.

Within himself believes he can beat him, but Button can also take points of their opponents more direct. Even if occasionally win their races, as it does today in McLaren, Button is for Alonso, the ideal companion.

Since English does not bother to share the team with a pilot difficult, as Alonso, McLaren finally came discredited in 2010, while world champion last year, and fought on equal terms with the darling of the house, Hamilton. Darling does not necessarily mean to have privileges, such as Alonso has always claimed.

Button to drive for Ferrari in 2013, potanto, you first have to agree with McLaren's contract just one year. And after Mass did not match next season, at least in the first part of the championship, when the images are defined and thereafter, in general, team leaders make their decisions.

As it turns out, has a lot to happen before Button race alongside Alonso. What is certain is the mutual interest of both Ferrari and Button, and that the two sides have talked.

Bruno Senna - In the race at Monza was the only one to make three pit stops (the other two) on the track that penalizes more pit stops. Still scored the first points in Formula 1 to receive the checkered flag in ninth. The race pace of Bruno with the Renault car was very good, just that with three pit stops, the first early in the competition, has advanced so far in the standings.

Bruno uses the intelligence and emotional balance to compensate for the lack of experience and the idle time to build his rise to Formula 1. Every workout or race shows signs of being able to grow significantly. It's my bet.

That's would be great. Button has nothing left to prove in mclaren he's more than handled Lewis. Would love two top Brits in two top cars. I can certainly see button wanting it, prove himself against the what is considered the best f1 driver.

Basically i would love it to happen.

Button said he would never play 2nd fiddle to any driver, so don't see it happening unless the lure of driving for Ferrari means more.

I think Ferrari will go for Perez in 2013.

Button would do well to go to Ferrari for a couple of seasons before retiring and would rather see Perez not taking the seat straight away, give him time to really learn how to out drive the car he's in before he gets a beast....

I can't see Button taking a contract where he is the guaranteed number 2 driver, which he would be at Ferrari. He just doesn't seem the type.
I think Ferrari will take a young driver when Massa leaves and let him learn his trade with Alonso, with an aim to making him the number 1 driver when Alonso retires.

McLaren will take up the option on Buttons contract for 2012, regardless of them sorting out a long term contract before the end of the season.
Isn't it mooted that Button like Hamilton, is trying to negotiate down the number of days they have to be available for sponsors. That could be the cause of the delay in signing a new long term deal?

I think with ferraris heritage, most F1 drivers dream of driving the red car with the prancing horse on. Having the tifosi cheering you on down the straight at monza etc.. has got to be one of the highlights of driving an F1 Car.

But at what cost ?

Being fernando's "female dog" ?

Only Jenson knows if thats a price worth paying to get in the Rosso Corsa coloured car

Domenicali said recently he wants a younger driver alongside experience. More likely Jenson is using Ferrari in his negotiations with McLaren.

Jenson had no problems being the female dog for Lewis last season (Turkey showed you all you need to know), so I am sure he would do the same with Alonso if he is being beaten ;)

Personally I doubt Fernando would go for it. Either that or he has it written into his contract that he'll be number one and any driver will be number two. I doubt Button would go for that either. He's playing with Whitmarsh to get less sponsor days and a payrise IMO.

Why does everyone think that he'll be the number 2 driver at Ferrari?

Granted Nando's their golden boy now, I reckon, Button might have an answer or two up his sleeve for the gusty Spaniard.

Most people said that he wouldn't stand a chance against Hamilton when he went to McLaren, he's silenced all his critics now with super performances - both in wet & dry races.

From Ferrari's perspective, Perez is a much better long term prospect than Button.

That might be true - but its also plausable that while Perez is still learning, it could cost Ferrari a championship or two while he is still relatively inexperienced (just one way of looking at it - Im not saying this would definitely happen)

Personally I would hate JB driving for Ferrari, I trust that team the least of allthe top teams by a huge margin, and I cant see JB getting a fair shout with developement etc also Ferrari have shown for years they give every chance to one driver and one driver only, if Fernando is still there (as is likely) JB would get royally ******** off the track / strategically

Im hoping this is just a negotiating tactic for a very decent McLaren (extented) deal - but who knows
