jeremy clarkson v the mail and mirror

Its hundreds of years old, and the word was not offensive until long after it was used in that counting rhyme. It was simply a neutral word expression and the rhyme in that form was written by Rudyard Kipling in an era when the word was not seen as pejorative as a method of teaching children to count. In much the same vein, a book I used to have as a child, and a song on record was Little Black Sambo, now deemed unacceptable in modern society, was not seen as racist or unacceptable back then, it was just a little Indian boys name.

So there is nothing wrong with 'white people' any more than there is with any other ethnic people.
However it is perfectly fine for people like Drake to use the word in their songs?

its sad and pathetic that people will dig up years old videos to try and stir **** enough to try and get someone the sack from their job, solely based i find on jealousy.

so what if he did even say it? its just a word at the end of the day. black people and rappers say it all the time its still allowed to be aired through the radio and tv.

are we going to ban the use of the word fat? or ugly? because it may offend people that are?

people really need to lighten up if thats all they have to worry about in their miserable and sad little lives.

Because the newspapers are the broadcasting poo-stirrers of society.

Amen to that. But alas, the court of public opinion is an inconsistent yet draconian establishment, with no statute of limitations.

Its all about context he clearing isn't racist, clearly didn't mean to cause offence plus it didn't even air! He mumbles something which may or may not be an offensive word... big deal.

I don't like Clarkson at all, but how can anyone honestly say he should lose his job over this? Some people have way too much time on their hands if they were offended at all by this.

I think half the problem, is no one is. I don't know a single person who gives a ****
It's our corrupt media peddling us their agenda to get one over on the bloke.
He's probably made a lot of enemies and they have jumped on it.

In my opinion it's a non story, when I heard he'd used the EN word I thought it must be in anger or as an exclamatory outburst but no just eeny meeny, he should have used another school yard choosing method as eeny meeny without the N is just a copout.

No, it's not a slippery slope. And that's a classic straw man argument. No-ones talking about bananas. It's about people using language and having attitudes that others (quite rightly, not wrongly) find offensive. Ignorance of why others might find offence is not an excuse.

Not a straw man, try again. He is drawing a parallel, like an apple is to an orange is to a pear. An inocolous word does not lead to a prejudiced attitude. For example, I had no idea slope has ever been a slur before that farce. Should I be fired if I use a common language word I had no idea could ever be construed as offensive?

Oh and hypocrite, not only is it not a straw man, you yourself have just commited an actual strawman, indeed the straw man that underpins this thread, highlighted in bold. This thread isn't about racist attitudes. Your straw man demands it's about racism. The claims 'clarkson made this joke, therefore clarkson has a racist attitude towards group y' is itself a strawman, thus proving how ridiculous and annoying you straw man wah wah posters are.

From the Dogg himself.

Is anyone else sick of other people getting offended by Top Gear.

Hammond: 'F430 Speciale Needs'
National Autistic Society: 'THAT IS OFFENSIVE!!111'

I'm fed up of this nimby attitude where you can't say this or you can't say that. Who gives a rats rear end. Somebody will always find something offensive so why should they constantly be apologising for it. Clarkson couldn't even drive a 4x4 over a peat bog (with the landowners permission) without the negative bunch claiming environmental sacrilege.

If the PC Brigade had their way, TV would die.

Yeah whatever. We were all talking about bananas.

Calling someone a "slope" no matter how cleverly disguised is racist. If you won't admit that (now you're aware) then you are on a slippery slope my friend. Pun intended.

No-one's talking about you BTW, or your ignorant bliss. Clarkson is clearly aware of it's implication.

Don't forget Jeremy Clarkson is also a journalist. And journalists are scum.

He has a column in the sun, most of the other stuff is either TV based, motoring based or historical based, he doesn't go around trying to get people sacked, hack peoples phones, or chase them around invading their privacy, and most of the time the guy actually speaks a lot of sense

Just happy to take a wage from a company that hacks people's phones, is complicit in smear campaigns and invades people's privacy then? (not to mention some of the other things the Sun are and have been particularly best at) What a good egg.

Doubt he will get sacked, even though he sold his stake to the BBC, which now has full control of Bedder 6 which owns Top Gear rights. It makes them over £30m and rising per year worldwide.

I doubt they would risk it, considering how much it benefits them.
