Jessops in administration

Without sounding like a douchebag, does that mean I can go down there and get some stuff with massive savings?

Nope, that's not really how these things work.

They have gone into administration and appointed a company to manage that. They want to keep the business going and look for possible new investors or people to purchase the company to save it. The company overseeing the administration is there to deal with bids and recoup as much money as possible for creditors.

They are likely going to start by closing stores, so will move stock to other outlets, plus they have their online business to.

In short, I wouldn't expect any big discounts. Just look at the thread on the Comet sale and they are gone completely.

Is it they are poorly run? Or is it the internet companies killing them on the bottom line?

IMO HMV could be great, but every HMV I go into is hot, untidy and has loads of tat in it.

You should see the high street here, nearly every other shop has the shutters down and a 'For Sale' sign outside of it. Looks so bloody grim and it's only going to get worse.

I've only ever bought one camera from Jessops, and its was fine. The guys were well informed, let me take a bunch of cameras off the shelves to try, went outside and took some comparative pictures, even printed a couple off to compare. They aren't on commission so don't care about trying to push the most expensive camera on you. All of this was for just for a sub £200 pocket camera too.

But as always with these things, its going to be up to the individuals you meet in the shops. The guy who helped me seemed to be quite into his cameras, whereas I expect a lot of people will just be 'generic shop assistant'.

I really couldn't care less about some stores going under if I just buy things online, but for shops that sell things you would like to go and use before buying, its a shame. But I imagine they just can't compete with the online sellers.

I think price is a big issue. When they sell things for a lot more than it can be had on amazon for example, why are people going to buy from a Jessops store?

Some things are the same as amazon if you reserve online to collect in store, but things like filters and what not are ridiculous.

Bit of a pain, but they were useful for picking up the small things quickly - memory cards etc...

They were going to charge me £12 for a 4GB Jessops own card instore just before Christmas... I ended up going to Argos and getting an 8GB Sandisk with 30mb/s read/write for £14. Not exactly good value for money so I doubt I would have ever bought anything from them again.

Completely and utterly this, I used to work for a good quality Private shop/ company in Belfast, not far from 2 Jessops shops, the amount of custom we had back then from poeple so frustrated that no one in Jessops would just talk to them about the cameras/ options etc was pretty high.

Haha! Oddly it's the Belfast one that has driven me up the wall the most :D

Had to go in there plenty of times and come out more angry and annoyed than I went in feeling.

Been in other ones since and just given up with the place.

I never had much trouble with the salespeople in Jessops...

Though I was manhandled by a security guard in their Oxford Street store when I walked in with a wet umbrella on a particularly miserable day. That was enough to make me personally not really want to shop in there again. I went to Jacobs directly over the road and bought a 70-200 f/2.8 ii from them instead, so Jessops loss really.

This sucks not many stores left on the high street that I would want to enter and look around in. Thing with jessops is i used to go in the shop and look around but never buy nothing. I think once i bought a mini tripod for a camera but that is about it.

I think they expanded too much, in some instances they had two stores within walking distance to each other. Rather than have competition in the market they would over expand.

They got hit with the move to digital when their business was based on developing film, they then got with lack of digital camera sales due to camera phones sales.

Where are all these staff going to go, comet, jessops, hmv, we talking 1000s of employed people looking for jobs. I think some are going to end up in IT.

There are virtually no shops on the high street that I would buy anything from, particularly electronics. The only shops that I would use the high street for now is clothes, and even then, I would go to the Trafford Centre (or a large retail outlet), rather than trek into Manchester city centre.
