Jessops in administration

Thats not up to me to say, but given the amount closures the last 5 years their current business model clearly isn't working is it. Adapt or.......

I would buy on the high street/retail park for convienience and avoid the rip off that can be online delivery charges and then the waiting, but the fact is even with delivery included online is still so much cheaper for many that you just cant justify it.

Thinking back the last thing i really bought on the street was a TF101 Transformer from Comet in store about 18 months ago, it was £10 more than online which was acceptable, and Comet / CPWH also seemed to have exclusivity on supply of these for a while at the time.

Well that's like half a plan. I agree with you those things will help but its not going to work.

Your post is like saying..

"Give away everything for free."
"How will they make a profit?"
"Not up to me, I just give you the good part!"

I think it is getting to the stage where retail business is out of date.

I didn't promise all the answers :p
Its obviously easy to point out the failures but there is no quick fix

But yeah, out of date, out of touch, too greedy.
A profit is a profit, but they strive for mega profits and numbers you and i can only dream of, Getting by wasn't good enough for many and greed got the better of them

They milked the consumer dry when they could and now they are too far behind to catch up with online retail or even compete

It still goes on, you dont have to go far to find a GTX580 on sale for the same as a 680 online, they deserve all thats coming to them for stuff like that

How about a drop in VAT too?

And getting them two Goons out of power...

Goons out of power could help.

VAT drop just encouraged price fixing last time, so things became a little cheaper but companies then rammed up prices because we all thought it was cheaper on the VAT and they exploited it. Since the rise to 20% somethings have become more expensive because of the change back (most subscription services like phones and internet providers have been very guilty of this).

No real point mucking about with VAT any more because it wont encourage people to buy more when companies will try to hoover up the profit from the vat change to maintain prices at current level. Only solution is to forcefully revalue the currency so we no longer pay over the odds for basic things...

This sucks not many stores left on the high street that I would want to enter and look around in.
A lot of folks have been banging on about the damage big stores like Tesco, Amazon etc. do with their massive buying power, their tax avoidance etc. Too often these folks, who are standing up for high street diversity, for independent local businesses get vilified for being Luddites or 'anti-capitalist'. If the current trajectory continues we'll only have half a dozen mega-stores to buy for and the consumer will be powerless. Ah well.

I purchased a 500d from Jessops (back when they were first out) and got an absolute bargain. £££s cheaper than I could find on the web. Granted it was most likely a one off.:D I normally only ever went in to try out the cameras / lenses before heading off to find a bargain elsewhere.

Going out shopping with the missus will become more boring now.

am i the only bloke that enjoys shopping a tiny bit due to the fact that u can leave ur missus in some woman shop while u have a little browse on hmv/jessops etc?

going out shopping with our missus is going to be a lot more boring

TDont adapt, dont survive, electrical reailers need to concentrate on services and accessories ie stuff that actually make money, since margins on cameras, computers etc are so low, Also need to concentrate on customer service, repairs etc. thats why currys/pcworld are surviving and all there 'competition' is going bust

Ah, there we go, you alone are the reason for Jessops's downfall!

Tbh the camera was £40 cheaper at JL and came with a 3 yr warranty whereas Jessops were selling the camera at full price with just a one yr warranty. So for me it was a no brainer getting it from JL in the end.

This is their new version of insurance policies! £50 just to look at you PC no matter whats wrong with it and then waayyyyyy over priced charges for things like "spring clean your PC"

It really makes my blood boil when you nip in and see some poor OAP in the queue who has just been fleeced £50 cause they just accidentally unistalled a printer

Sure not everyone knows about PCs or how to fix them but places like this just take advantage and i cant help but smile when i see them suffer

And as for accessories, i had a right chuckle in comet when i spotted a monster hdmi cable reduced in their firesale.....still a bargain at £35! Idiots

Crazy how quick they have shut down. - So many companies going under it is mental.

Christmas is such a large focus of trade that its the most likely time for this. I'm surprised that HMV hasn't filed yet. I wont want them just as Jessops as its staff are REAL PEOPLE with families who may depend on them supporting them.

That being said it is adapt or die and Argos told it as it is when they said they are exiting bricks and mortar for online trade.

I'd imagine jessops made a lot of their income from printed photos.
boots etc all started doing those printing machines and the younger generations are all using instagram and facebook and dont seem to care about a physical copy.
theres no way for a company like jessops to exist anymore unless they went online only and closed all their shops before it was to late but I could imagine even if that idea was brought up the shareholders and directors would have been against it

a lot of places will likely also close this year mainly the lower working class shops that are left like HMV etc , soon we will be left with only department stores with limited ranges and no expertise in any products they sell
