Jimmy Savile - Sexual Predator

Typical man response, take the massive problem of rape, and twist and turn it to make it about them and the tiny comparative problem of false rape claims, further perpetrating the myth that rape is something that doesn't happen and when it does, something fishy is going on with it.

I have done or said none of those things, but I have made a structured argument based on what we know and not made irrational and emotive claims based on flawed evidence.

If you have solid facts and figures to back up your headline claims, please bring them to the table.

I will willingly listen and change my mind if you can present rational and fact based argument instead of instantly refuting any opinion that is not the same as yours with comments like the quote above (comments, I should add, that bring very little progress to the discussion). Again, because I do not agree with you, I am wrong.

Oh, and yes rape does happen. No it is not fishy when it does.

Does it happen to a quarter of the female population as you suggest?

Honestly, I don't know, but I seriously doubt it. However, I will change my mind if you can show me it does.

Cheers

Buff

Typical Hurfdurf. If you don't agree with him in this area you are instantly a "rape apologist".

Next you'll be called a pedo because, in today's World, if anyone wants to make a point or an argument then they just bring in kiddy fiddling and everyone HAS to agree or they are closet pedos themselves

Are you sure it is a him and not a her?

I think it's retarded how this is being portrayed in the media.

Bbc allready officially apologized and everyone making out like he's been convicted.
Yes it's almost certain he did it, but I don't think such apologies and media should happen till after the police investigation.

Seems many people new about. It, so police will have a lot of work to do and lots of court cases.

How am I a whipped cat?

It probably does shape my views on sex quite a bit, and I am no longer self employed, I'm back with an agency tyvm :p

You're a male escort?

:D

As for this other unsavoury business, looks like a lot of journalists who had experiences (I'm not sure if that word choice is any better than encounters..) are all crawling out the woodwork claiming it's all makes sense now with hindsight..

Looks like the BBC may have been caught with its pants down over this as well.

However, in many cases the allegations are not true - and being falsely accused of rape (or any sexual offence) can ruin someones life because it is a shadow that never goes away.

How many is "many"? How many is it when compared to the number of rapes? I agree that false rape allegations are serious, however the links you have posted seem to suggest that it is being dealt with. I would however hazard a guess that number of false allegations pale into insignificance next to the actual ones.

The CPS VAW report states that for 2010-2011 4,208 cases of rape were brought to prosecution in England and Wales, of which 2,465 resulted in conviction (58%). It also shows that this kind of conviction rate has been consistent since 2007. Likewise, men were the defendants in 98% of sexual offence cases, of which 3,549 out of 6,588 were successfully convicted (74% 2010-2011 figures).

The problem is that rape will often come down to "he said/she said" where there will be little chance of a successful prosecution so no case will go to court.

Then there will be the many women that don't report it because they are raped by husbands or partners or they don't want the stigma attached to being a rape victim.

Based on that statement of fact, and I use the term loosely as you dont say whether that is per year or in a lifetime then we see: if we apply that soley to the 2006 population figures, that 5.5 million females were raped in England and Wales in 2006. That's a quarter of the female population in England and Wales (obviously).

If we apply it to a "1 in 4 women are raped in their lifetime" scenario, and we say the average lifespan of a woman is 84 years (but ignore population growth and changes in demographic for ease of purpose), but assume that rape age is from age 15 onwards then we get approximately 325,500 women being raped each year.

I suspect the 1 in 4 figure is based on the Painter 1991 study, which actually based its findings on only 1,007 women, which is woefully inadequate for a 'national' survey and does not accurately reflect the nation.

What ever way you cut it, regardless of the actual figure, an awful lot of women are raped, even 1 in 200 is a pretty horrendous figure.

If you want to point fingers, maybe try with false reporting of rapes as well as the way figures are massaged to suit government agendas.

Seriously? If we really want to point fingers it should be at those few occasions where rape is falsely reported? As opposed to the many cases where rape actually happens?

I don't get this thread any more...

The man's work has been entirely undone, so I think there is very little chance of retribution, why are people defending the man now?

Are people trying to hold onto this because it is apart of their childhood and cant see past TV screen to find that people have different sides to them than the one portrayed?

I suppose one should expect this from the TV generation.

JS was always a strange guy. Never guessed about what is in the news about him now but there you go! If it is all true I guess he will have the knighthood removed?

On the news tonight, several of the (alleged) victims now want to sue the BBC... and the NHS? 'Tis on ITV.
