Joe Lycett - Qatar/Beckham debate

It’s not someone’s house. It’s a public international event with majority support from nations with a “liberal” tradition. If you can’t be reasonably hospitable, don’t apply to host the tournament.
This is spot on, and it's why UEFA will fine clubs if their fans sing songs or chants that are deemed offensive, even if they aren't deemed offensive in that particular host country where the tie is being played. If those clubs want to take part in a UEFA competition then they need to meet UEFA expectations and standards.

There is no such thing as a regular fan in Qatar. You have to be super gucci belt level rich to go out there to watch the football.
Have a look at the video posted recently of the "English" fans. Qatar will fill the stadiums with migrant workers pretending to be fans - and they'll probably dock the price of the football strip from their wages.

And then right on cue...

First face you see is… David beckham is he the head of slaves or something.

the press is just such fabricated nonsense
Without intention, you've literally just demonstrated the credibility that David Beckham can bring purely by association, which is the very reason he's being criticised for this shameful sell out.

Just a "retired footballer" - :p

The shredding of the Attitude Magazine is much more poignant. Good on him.

He’s very good at getting a message out there and getting people talking. Guys an artist and a genius.

Agreed, he's transcending comedy and into politics & art and he's great entertainment into the bargain.

I haven't enjoyed the spectacle of the perpetually outraged since 2008 when I watched an episode of Question Time on an oil rig in a TV lounge packed full of Geordies, with Grayson Perry on the panel wearing a long powder-blue dress with puffed sleeves and full Aunt Sally make up.

Class :p

What a bizarre twist to proceedings; team Iran was the real winner yesterday. :)

England have never enjoyed an opening World Cup match like this. Six goals, and a performance soaked in exuberance and enticing possibilities, laid down an early marker for the next four weeks in Qatar. Yet this game will surely be remembered for something else entirely: the remarkable sight of Iran’s players refusing to sing the national anthem in a gesture of solidarity with oppressed women and protestors back home.

I'm going to take a wild guess that the penalty for not singing doesn't include being carded.
The yellow card was the perfect opportunity to raise awareness; what's a protest without sacrifice? Their armbands were a hollow gesture and a demonstration that they aren't prepared to go beyond lip service - that's how they've ended up there in the first place - any one of them could have withdrawn from the squad on principle.

The Iranians may face a lot harsher rebuke than a yellow card, so your comment is a bit misplaced, IMO.

Yes but just like Joe not targeting the squad (public blowback) or the BBC (his employer) there's priorities, hence he went with Beckham.

No one wants the kind of penalties they can't endure.

Getting carded falls into the public blowback area, many won't care about the protest but they will get extremely ****** that you sabotaged the national team.

And finally, the whole team seemed to be very much on board with that protest. I did not hear the same was true for the teams who dropped the armband protesting. How are you meant to play with your teammates if they're not on board with you risking the performance of the team by kneecapping yourself.

Can someone break down for me what happened? Was any player who wore the armband threatened with a yellow card?
They were all talk about the Captains of England and Wales both wearing a rainbow Captain's armband to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. FIFA said they'd get a yellow card if they did it, so they folded like a pack of cards.
