Joel, Jim & Jassim - Utd Ownership

We'll never know for sure of course but there were quite a lot of reports that Martial was Joel's favourite player and he didn't want him sold. Even if you ignore that one though there have been numerous other times the Glazer's or their puppet Woodward have interfered in transfers. At no point has a manager had carte blanche of what to do with transfer funds.

Yeah I agree, reporters are saying that he wants control over footballing decisions now but I just can't see the leeches handing over the reins

To be honest. I reckon they’d be happy to just say right we want X amount in divs per year and we aren’t spending or putting any money in. At all. Just inform us on key revenue changes.

The ultimate passive income that they haven’t paid a penny of their own money for - at all. Then they don’t even need to do anything. Win win for them.

There's not a chance in hell that the Glazers hand over the keys while they're still majority owners. I doubt they'll have any issue allowing Ratcliffe to be responsible for football decisions (they'd love somebody to take the blame in fact) however all budgets that he'll work to will be set by the club.

I wasn’t meaning the keys to the kingdom just the daily running of the club as in the football side of it as you’ve said. They’ll want to know where the club is going commercially, tours, transfer targets etc an update every month while the money is rolling in.

Ultimately we have no control over all of this. Qatar would have been good from the money side of things (and bad in other ways) - but the club can generate enough anyway, it's just been fluffed.

I am just hoping the Glazers will effectively let Ratcliffe take the lead on things, they'll hopefully appoint a better Director of Football. Of course it will all need the Glazers agreement, but they genuinely don't seem to care about the football side of things that much.

No guarantees that Ratcliffe will do a good job, but the Glazers and their staff have done a thoroughly terrible one, so it's something to be positive about, IMO.

I really don't think it's a case of them wanting updates on x or y while they sit back with their cigars. The Glazers don't care about who you're signing, what they care about is the business - how much money is coming in, how much is going out and the balance sheet because that effects the value of their investment and those $bn's are worth a hell of a lot more to the Glazers than £10-15m per year of dividends.

All major financial decisions will still be made at boardroom level and while I'm sure Ratcliffe would join the board, the Glazers will still have the controlling say. What I suspect they'll be happy to allow Ratcliffe to do is be the man that makes the strategic football decisions at the club within predetermined budgets. He'd be tasked with hiring and firing managers, directors of football (or similar) and how transfer and wage budgets are spent.

Meh, I have largely disconnected from United over the past 15 years of mismanagement of the club. At this point I don't really care that much. We haven't been a proper functioning football club for a long time and that doesn't look like changing any time soon.

Some details for anyone interested (from James Ducker & The Athletic) -

  • Sir Jim Ratcliffe will take immediate control of football operations at Manchester United should his 25 per cent investment be ratified by the club’s board - possibly as early as this week (meeting on Thursday)

  • Ratcliffe is thought to be willing to pay up to £1.35 billion for just a quarter stake - a significant premium on United’s £2.6bn market valuation - but in return he has insisted on a clause that grants him control of sporting matters at a time when Ten Hag’s side are sitting 10th in the Premier League after a torrid start to the season.

  • Under a co-ownership deal, the Glazers would still retain control of commercial operations. It is also uncertain what it would mean for much needed upgrades to Old Trafford, although one well placed source said the need for investment in the stadium was being taken into account.

  • That could mean that not all the money offered by Ineos goes to shareholders and there is also an expectation that the Glazers’ voting rights will be diluted under the terms of any agreement.

So as we suspect, Ratcliffe will likely be running the football operation, so we will see changes - hopefully for the better.

This is where I am also. My love for the game is tarnished by the over commercialisation and lack of moral compass exhibited by the governing bodies, clubs, players and owners. Fans shouldn't have to think about the club ownership if it's being done right. United haven't been a properly functioning anything in recent years and there have been precious few moments where the team has been able to distract with genuine sporting brilliance. I was pretty queasy about Qatar state ownership. I'm tired of Glazer ownership but more because they have no passion for the team vs any financial aspect.

Ultimately I want to see the team play entertaining football and challenge the bigger teams in the league and Europe. Sadly despite investment levels that dwarf most other clubs and a procession of hand picked coaches we still don't see much to cheer. Let's just hope ten Hag can demonstrate some improvement and give us something to take our minds off the rest of the United ****show.

He won't do a good job, just look at Nice in a mickey mouse league.

I'm not sure it's quite that simple, we'll have to wait and see. What we do know is the Glazers have made a complete mess of the last decade, Ratcliffe might provide a new direction.

Qatar and PSG have hardly dominated everything, despite having huge funds. They're always in some sort of scandal too.

Exactly you only have to look at the Saudi's to see what is good ownership. It happened almost instantly after such a poor show from Ashley.

SJR has owned Nice for 4 years and nothing has materialised.
It happened quickly because Ashley spent nothing for years. Where as United are up against it with FFP. They couldn't spend another billion just because they Qataris have it. Newcastle too will hit the FFP wall and have to slow down.

Uniteds issue is that they aren't starting with a blank slate. They have a hell of a lot of expensive baggage and a bad culture at the club that will take a long time to fix. Newcastle up to a point started from a low point but didn't have to worry about a lot of the issues United will have to contend with.

Newcastle will start to come across some of these issues as they cement their place but for now they are in a good place where there aren't many egos and there is loads of competition and good feeling around the club.

I am not talking about transfers. Just look at everything around the club. From the get go they spent money on the club. Now they have plans to expand the stadium. It brings a positivity to the club that lifts the team and everyone there. You can see a clear structure for the future. You work in any industry that has clear goals and you see everyone up their game. Moral is high and everyone is happy.

All this minority stake will do to United is make things worse all over. It must be a hugely toxic and depressing place to be really.

Imagine just working there being part of the cog knowing your owners are just leeches taking the place you work for every penny going.
