John 'lion heart' Terry Retires From International Football

He claims his position in the team was made untenable by the charges brought against him by the FA. Other than losing the captaincy (which isn't new to him), I'm not sure how his position has been made untenable - he's been allowed to play on and both Capello and Hodgson have stuck by him.

I suspect he's using it as an excuse to retire either to save himself for Chelsea and/or because he fears he'll lose his place in the side. Whatever the truth is, Mark Halsey's relieved.

He says it is because he has been cleared of his charges but the FA are taking it upon themselves to do their own thing.

Love him or hate him the guy was an amazing defender and isn't bad now still. His reading of the game and throwing himself into tackles/blocks was what made him so good. Quality defender.

He was very good and while he's not as good now and a fair few mistakes have crept into his game, worryingly he's better than any other CB available to England.

I disagree.

I think he was a good defender but very limited and very one dimensional. He was, for years, made to look a lot better then he was because he played along side a very good partner in the centre of defence.

There are several English defenders in recent years that have far exceeded his level of ability.

Lol, haters gonna hate.
Cue the drivel from those not clever enough to read facts.
He's not in the same league when it comes to (alleged) racism or (alleged) extra marital affairs as Suarez or Giggs (with his brother's wife? seriously?) yet he's public enemy no.1. Right.

I guess Roy will be on the phone to Rio begging him to come back now.

I'd be surprised. One good thing to come from this is that if/when Ferdinand isn't called up, the theory that his exclusion was because of Terry can be put to bed.

It's breaking now that several other Chelsea players are retiring from International football too. Apparently they want to spend more time with their families rather than travel the world, knowing that Terry will still be in London.

I'd say Suarez easily gets as much if not more abuse, and there wasn't even any evidence of what he said, I mean we saw what Terry said and also sleeping with his team-mates bird.

But he's in his own league when it comes to:

Mocking Americans days after 9/11
Parking in disabled bays
Charging for tours of the Chelsea training ground
Renting out his private box at Wembley
Connections to coke dealers and shoplifters
****ing everywhere in nightclubs but the toilet

He's just misunderstood of course.

When he had Makelele in front of him and a better centre back alongside him in Carvalho at Chelsea Terry did look good for a couple of years but he's never been as good as Ferdinand or Campbell or any other stand out centre backs England have had over the past 20 years.

The only reason why he's now arguably England's best centre back is because of Rio's suspect fitness record, the inexperience the likes of Smalling, Jones and Caulker have and the fact that the rest Cahill, Lescott, Jagielka etc etc are all pretty much of a muchness and all fairly untested at the highest level (2 of them have only played half a season in the UCL and the other not at all).
