So, I'm 19. Don't have many qualifications, currently work part time in retail (been there for 3 years), looking at options.

One is to go back to college and pay to study for an NVQ/BTEC/etc in something vaguely interesting, and then attempt to get a job in that area or a better one with my current employer.

Second is to join the Army/RAF/RN. Would be interested in IT/Intelligence/Comms. I'm fairly good with computers (build them, solve problems with them, etc) and pretty level headed. Never get angry or stressed, even when chasing after shoplifters. ¬_¬

Any advice from anyone who's serving now?

I've got two cousins in the forces, and my sisters boyfriend, and they seem to enjoy it. One cousin and the boyfriend are Royal Marines, other cousin joined the RAF about a year ago. Plenty of ex-forces too.

well i want my young'en to join the army when he groes up so i can absolve myself of all responsability and wash hands so to speak.

Join the royal artillery. Its mostly behind the lines, and you get huge toys :D

Its also a big target for any enemy, but lets just forget that part.

Join the navy,at least you get to see a bit of the world without everyone trying to blow you up or shoot you all the time.
A mate is just about to deploy on his first cruise,9 months to the Falklands...;)

If you are serious about the communications/Intel/IT then I would suggest you go to your local ACO and talk to them about the Royal Signals.

if you want to be told what to do and how to solve a problem, join the army. There is no room for initiative at the lower rank. If you want to use yuor brain join the RAF.

Speaks from 4 years Army, seeing the light and now in the RAF!

I tried to join the RAF on two of those listed, comms and IT. Both were decent paying 4 year Appreticeships. About 17.5k.

Needless to say, with all of those out of work, those positions were filled very quickly.

This was about a year ago, and the MoD careers office advised me to keep callng every 3 months.

My advise would be, if you want a decent career, join the RAF/RN. I know the Army has these sort of "back-office" style jobs. But I think both the RAF and RN will make it more worthwhile.

EDIT: RAF Apprenticeships / ICT Technician Apprenticeship

The Wirral isn’t far from The Dale Barracks (CH2 4BD), why NOT contact the resident battalion (1st Battalion The Royal Welsh, formerly The Royal Welch Fusiliers), a famous Infantry Battalion who fought/surrendered at York Town and is actually mentioned in Joseph Heller’s Catch 22. They are a good set of guys! The Really Are. They are commanded by a 1st Class Commanding Officer.

I’ve been talking to a few of them lately; two of them have prosthetic legs from being blown up in Afghanistan on a previous tour of duty. The Battalion returned from their second tour of duty about a month or so ago. One really nice guy from the Caribbean came to UK to join the British Army, he returned from Afghanistan blinded in one eye and injured in the other. Another guy from the Regiment I talk too couldn’t be happier (the daily doses of morphine might have something to do with it), he’s hoping to have his injured leg (Afghanistan again) amputated above the knee so he can resume a “normal” life with his lovely wife and young children. He tells me quite often (I think the medication makes him repeat himself) that a friend of his in another battalion had similar injuries and had his leg amputated and his friend said “it was the best thing that had happened to him”.

There’s always the Navy.

Wow! You're obviously quite ignorant.

If you are determined to join the service then the Navy is for you. Get into the silent service; you won't regret it (unless you are claustrophobic) almost a family atmosphere without the festive fight.
