JOKER 2: Folie à Deux

From all the various rumours on SM (and therefore 100% accurate :D) one possibility is that the director specifically didn't want another Joker film to be made, so when the studio pressured him, rather than passing on it and it being made by someone else, he's deliberately "poisoned the well" with this film, ensuring the franchise dies here and now.

No idea how true that is, buts its an interesting think to consider, almost cutting your nose off to spite your face etc as this film has hurt any further career he had I'd say.

It does sound conspiracy theory-esque, but I find it believable. It reminds me of a nightclub I went to in late 2022 with perfectly ample security but got closed down a fortnight later due to inadequate security which allowed a fatality (stabbing) to happen. My belief is that the local council killjoys didn't want this place open in the first place and ordered someone with inside tracks to manage the club that night and torpedo it. Different motive to the Joker but this is what it reminded me of.

Seen it. I think the sad thing about this movies is that it was incredibly well acted etc but was just pointless. The musical numbers just detracted imo and there was nothing jaw dropping or surprising, it just felt like the film didn't need to be made as by the end of the movie it added nothing.

As always, it'll be interesting to see the 2nd week drop off, once word of mouth has gotten around "the normies" (who generally avoid culture war stuff) about the quality (good or bad) of this film

I posted the above just after the 1st weekend and now we have the results from the US box office for the 2nd weekend - a 89% drop off from 1st Friday compared to 2nd Friday and, comparing a full 3 day weekend to weekend, its had an overall 80% drop - one of the worst 2nd week drops off's in movie history!

A lot of the International sales for the 2nd weekend haven't come through yet and those were the only bright-spot in the full 1st week box office, so we'll have to wait and see if it can hold out compared to the US box office collapse or not but, from those that have given the results, it looks like a disastrous 2nd week might be coming from everywhere.

Its only just squeezed over $200m in the global box office which, based on the "official" $200m budget (meaning $500m-$600m to break even) is a bit of a change from the $1 BILLION they got paid when they made a film for "the fans" rather than for some mysterious "audience" that apparently doesn't exist in anywhere near the same levels.

Maybe studios should pay attention to things like that before they go bust, or not, their choice :)

Coming off the success of the first film and what it did for the character, this was a hard watch, I haven't clocked out of a film in a long time but this had me checking the run time towards the end and every time another musical number started it was hard to get through, I've no idea who the target audience for this was, felt like they were almost forced into making another one due to how much money the first made and no one wanted to make a good movie or really be there and they milked $200 million out to make this, where did the budget go?

Clearly the actors and production crew didn't get paid enough for the first one, so the second one they got paid 4x the amount? :)
