Junior Doctors Strikes

How come we have doctors and nurses saying they can’t get jobs whilst we bring in people from abroad? If we need doctors we should be recruiting from within than getting them from abroad because the healthcare system is almost like an essential utility.

My friend who is a surgeon says there can be issues with some of the doctors and nurses coming from abroad. He doesn’t agree with junior doctors asking for payrises but he does think the situation with them not getting work is not right.

They're brought in after qualifying to bypass the restrictions on foreign students.

Government kept the taps open to flood the market and get locum rates down, GP training is predominantly international medical graduates these days and the result is not pretty. GMC was also making good money from PLAB fees so just kept accepting applicants.

What a difference Streeting sodding off makes. Complete foolishness to have made this so adversarial.
Whilst Wes was the end of a bell, I don't think him leaving was much of a factor. The deal was barely different to the previous rejected deal that was put to the membership. It felt like this was more strike apathy, dropping turnouts and a mandate coming to an end that was looking unlikely to get renewed.

What is wonderful though is that Wes can't claim victory and use it to launch a PM bid.

It is hard to attribute cause, so I cannot claim to be certain about why, doubtless it was a combination of factors but it seems like the new minister was willing to make a number of low costs moves to help end the strike and also changed the approach of the government. Wes somehow managed to combine offering pretty decent terms with offending basically everyone by the manner he went about things.

That's leaving aside the other issues in his management of the NHS.
