Just because new shiny hits doesn't mean we all have to upgrade

Yeah at £319.99 the 6700k should be bundled with a cheap motherboard glad I got at £263.99 before the price went up to £299.00 lol.

I'm still on my 2600k (original) at stock. Runs everything I play at max, with ease. Only things I've upgraded are the SSD and GPU.

Must be 4 years old now.

I guess I am very "green" when it comes to CPUs. I have never overclocked in my life! So you would recommend the i7 4790K?

I guess I liked the idea of using DDR4 and I need a new mobo anyways.

Without doubt ...if you already have some DDR3 getting a 4790k is a no brainer ...why spend 200 on an i5 6600k and then more on some ddr4 that offers no performance gains :p

Even at stock 4ghz and turbo 4.4ghz plus 8 threads it's great.

I am hitting 100% cpu with Crysis 3 on my i5 2500 which I am disappointed with, getting drops to 30fps on my 980 ti @ 1440p. I did not have this issue with my 970 @ 1080p, is this normal?

Crysis 3 loves threads...get a decent CPU !!!! :D

How much DDR 3 have you got ?

Thanks! It is all so confusing lol. What mobo would you recommend for this i7?

I have looked at the MSI Gaming 5 or Asus Z97-P?

z97p is a great mobo for the money. And it's only 68 quid...

Gaming is about bang for buck mate...choose wisely pair that with a 4790k and you have mobo and chip for roughly the same price as a 6700k :p

Yeah you make valid points! I guess I feel DDR4 will become the standard in the future but I guess that is a long way off yet!

What about the i5 4690K? Is this a waste of money too? I don't use my PC for anything but gaming and web browsing/music.

Would I need a new cooler to OC the i5 or i7? I currently have one that's labelled as "SUPER QUIET 22dBA TRIPLE COPPER HEATPIPE CPU COOLER"

Thanks for the help!

Been waiting for Skylake (+mATX) for ages.

Disappointed by the offerings so today bought 5820k + gigabyte x99m bundle at £414.

Kicker for me was that the only good z170 mATX board (so far) was £170.

Went with your advice and purchased the i7 4790K, Z97-P and a 212 evo cooler. Can't wait!

Never ever changed a mobo/cpu but it can't be that hard right?

pretty easy.

I've never actually managed to get it to switch on first time though lol.

Always forget / mess up something, usually the on off button jumpers. Always sort it out pretty quickly though.

That said it is nice to see the floodgates open on places like the MM and the bay as everyone races to sell off their "old" tech and the resulting bargains that can be had from a flooded market place.
