Just got the phone call that is going to change our lives.

Put the offer in last week, it was a repo so its in a bit of a mess, only cosmetically hopefully though.

Any advice/help etc please post cos im completely in the dark on what to do, any colour suggestions or cheap websites to get furniture/paint/accessories as apparently i am in charge of the soft furnishings :) which means the bedroom is going to be purple (yeah)

Go for it then folks!!!!!!!!

My biggest suggestion is PLAN EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU START.

When decorationg/refurbing, its easy to go for the obvious jobs - wallpapering, carpeting, painting etc. Only to realise that you need to fix some plumbing or some wiring etc, and have to dug up floorboards, cut into walls etc.

Start with a plan for each room, write down all the jobs you need to do, and work out an order to do them in - it will save you a lot of hassle...

Best to go to actual furniture/DIY places for ideas or to actually buy stuff rather than look on the net IMO.

Just get loads of colour charts and see what you like best.

We got most of our stuff from IKEA or local furniture shops.

Make sure you can actually afford to decorate as well. Assuming you mean you are having a mortgage for the house, take into account all the costs before you actually get the keys. Also wait for a surveryors report to see if the money needs to spent elesewhere on more important things.

As said always remember the 7 P's Proper Planning and Preperation Prevents Urine Poor Performance.

Are you buying to renovate and sell or are you planning on living there for a while.

If renovating remember to decorate neutrally and to emphasise space where its needed and cosiness where its needed.

If to live there decorate as you feel fit. All comes down to personal tastes. Our bedroom is white on three walls and a deep shiny purple on the wall the bed head is against.

Yuo can decorate with accent walls as above, dado rails to partion a wall top and bottom, wall paper is quick coverage and instant effect but can be a nightmare.

Main points to remember is do things in order - decorating is the last 10% of any renovation. Unless the walls are in a good condition before you start the covering you put on will be wasted. Plan what you need to do, cost it up on the generous side and stick 20% on top for contingency. Then plan what you can do within budget and in what order.

Really cannot stress enough how much planning you should do. It will always cost more than you intially budget but if you are sensible with your spending and include a contingency then you will be fine.

try and do most of the upgrading/decorating/building etc before you move in if possible.

IT is much easier to do that than move in and try and work in the house at the same time

Congrats!

Ikea stuff ***!!! granted some of their stuff breaks for fun, but me and the little lady just bought mostly Ikea and have gradually replaced a lot of it with better quality stuff (Habitat and Pier ).

Look I brought my house to this thread

sorry :(

Best advice I can give is to get the right tools for the job. Hire a professional wallpaper steamer and sander etc. Very reasonable prices by the day and you will get the jobs done in far less time and less arguing.

The forum isn't big enough to keep a house in mate, might want to use somewhere else :/

EDIT *beaten :/

First advice is: calm down until you have the contracts signed.

I had my offer accepted 6 weeks ago and at the moment it's currently still with solicitors and I'm still waiting for some of my searches back. It looks like it's going to take at least three months, possibly longer.

We have ordered a sofa, but we've not set the delivery date so we can still get a refund on that if it falls though. We have also picked some other furniture but we've not confirmed the order, even though it has a 3 month delivery time. If the house falls though we'll have nowhere to put it.

You are going to spend quite a bit of money in the next few months so don't buy anything else until you know for sure that the house is yours.

Congrats though!! (It's soooo exciting!)

AHAHAHAHA, i didnt know what the hell was going on here for about 5 mins as i read it as 'Just bought a HORSE'

I was like wtf? Why would you decorate a horse.

Anyway, congrats on taking a step on the property ladder

Yeah, i had my offer accepted back in mid december. Im finally due to complete early next month. In total, it wouldve taken 5 months. Normally properties tend to take 2-3 months to complete, but the vendor in my situation seems a bit disorganised.

Personally i believe in decorating slowly, if u plan to live in the house. There shouldnt be any real rush and i think it would be an idea to do one room at a time. This way its not too stressful on you or your finances.

what is it with you people and pics of potential property? ;)
Me and pheebs had another gander at our hopeful place last week... Very exciting, but obviously going through the motions at the moment, so keeping a level head for now.
Infact we had the survey results come through today - need to sit down and scrutinize that this evening!!!

Goodluck Jenni!
