I have no sympathy for the old guy. He clearly is no longer capable of driving and the longer he deludes himself that he can, the more people are going to be at risk, regardless of how slowly, or how careful he thinks he's being.

I do have sympathy for him (as well as the OP of course). It's very easy to have your attitude at a young age, but I guarantee as you get older it will change. Clearly the old boy has got to the stage where he should be hanging up his keys, but that's a huge blow to his independence and lifestyle. It's all very well saying use taxis, but taxis aren't cheap or convienient for all but shopping trips etc.
