Just crashed my Celica Gen 7 GT

After bouncing his car of the OPs, he parked it in a hedge. I think it's safe to assume it was more than a 'lapse in concentration' and he is't 'as good as he was 30 years ago'.....

There is a pretty hefty skid mark heading in that general direction. Maybe there was front end damage and he just got the car as out of the way as best possible? Or maybe he thought there was more damage and just let it roll out of the way? Or maybe his brain was a bit screwed from just being in a shunt.

When I was smacked into I stopped, yanked on the hand brake and jumped straight out of the car... with the engine running and the car in 1st. I don't normally make a habit of doing that but you aren't always thinking 100% straight in the heat of the moment.

Ive crashed my car, should I be taken off the road? Should Fox for doing a hedgegrind in the 5? Accidents are accidents, they come through peple misjudging the sitiation. If this old guy was crashing left right and center then maybe the 'ban him' comments would be justified, but until then we are just assuming that because he is old he is unfit

As drexel said above you, not only did he pull right into the path of an oncoming vehicle (not just losing control when pushing his car round country roads as Fox did) he then drove into a sign and ditched his car into a bush to park up. It's pretty clear that he is NOT fit to drive, regardless of his age.

He went into the sign and bush as he didnt straighted up his wheel after the collision, probably due to the shock of the side impact.

I made a mistake in driving too fast for the conditions, Fox made a mistake in over-correcting and not expecting the ESP to kick in (IIRC?) This guy made a mistake in misjudging the OPs speed and thinking he could make the turn.

Having been one of only two people in this thread who actually saw the guy (and the accident scene) I can safely say judging by his physical and mental reactions he didn't look anywhere near fit to be on the road. Sad, but true.

Some of the comments are great here, lets see if you will let some 20 year old nerd tell you shouldn't be on the road when you are an OAP.

We all make mistakes.

That is true.

However, driving across the path of an oncoming car AND parking ones car in a bush is a bit ridiculous.

He clearly has no control over the vehicle and should therefore not be driving.

P.s. Unlucky mate. Use it as an excuse to get a different car perhaps?

Ok, well the car is in the bodyshop and has been deemed that it isnt a write-off.

They ran out of golfs so gave me an alfa romeo spider as a courtesy car. Which I'm quite enjoying.

Repair work should take 1-2 weeks.

And that isnt a skidmark leading towards the bush, that was his radiator leaking...

Alfas suck, it will be in the garage within the next 24hrs with electrical faults!

Unlucky about the accident, certainly appears that the chap driving shouldn't have been. Do you know if he actually had a valid licence?

Thats windsor lane on the way up to Burnham High St isn't it ? That exact same thing nearly happened to me a good few years ago at that spot!

Christ matey,

I know that area, bought my bimmer from down the road there, Berkshire Motors.

Are you the lad i bought a psp from not long back? Hope you get the car sorted out soon matey.

That fence still hasnt been repaired, also did you leave your number plate there? As im sure i saw a number plate sat in the fence.

Hope you get it sorted soon. Its a nice looking car.

BTW im sure it was you i swapped the mozart with for the psp lol

Yeah now I've had a drive in it I'd stick to the Celica.

On first looks the spider is a very pretty car, its styled by italians so looks gorgeous. It definately turns heads and the interior is lovely too. Leather seats, the plastics feel expensive, leather on the inside of the doors, and the whole center console in brushed aluminium with everything positioned really well, its once you start driving the story turns worse.

I've never driven a car and felt less connected from the road, in a celica you can feel exactly what the wheels are doing, every bump they go over, how much grip you have and I love this in a car. I love stiff suspension set-ups and feeling exactly what the front wheels are doing. But in the Alfa the suspension is too soft to allow for any of this, it takes too much of the fun out of driving and if feels like the whole road is made of foam and it doesnt inspire confidence at all. It does have VSC and TRC systems though and its full time 4 wheel drive, maybe Im just not confident enough as I don't want to stack a courtesy car. Then there's weight distribution, the engine is mahusive and so heavy that it feels like a dead horse is tied to the front end, and I dont like that at all, in the celica I feel the weight is much better distributed front rear and the handling is much better for it. The spider is also taller than the celica, and as such has a higher COG and body roll is much more apparant around tighter bends.

I have certain country roads near my house that I'm very experienced in and I can put a celica down there at National Speed, but in this I dont feel as comfortable and I feel I have to go slower and I've even had traffic waiting behind me a few times as I'm traveling at 40 which would never happen in the celica. I can do faster speeds in a 1.2 fiat punto down these roads than I can in the Alfa, but again that could just be fear of stacking it.

Then theres the engine, its a 2.4 litre turbo diesel and the lag on it is awful. If your sitting stationary and need to move in a hurry you havent got a chance. 0-60 may be 8.1 seconds but 0-10 must take at least 3 of those, but once the turbo kicks in its pretty responsive as long as you have it in the right gear, but thats the same on any car with a turbo. Fuel ecomomy is stated as 46mpg and this is pretty realistic, when booting it around town it can get as low as 7mpg during acceleration, but when your doing 60 on the motorway it will give you a constant 70-80mpg (according to the computer) which isnt bad at all. One other thing that lets this engine down though is exhaust noise, I love a little bit of a roar when I plant my foot, this has what looks like 4 exhausts at the back but is silent during operation, the only time it makes any noise is at idle, and it sounds remarkably similar to a ford transit I drove once.

So yeah, its a beautiful car with some poor handling, but it has other things going for it.

Its got a computer system that would make Bill Gates proud. I've never driven a car with this much computer kit on it. Ok I doubt its as good as iDrive on the BMW's but I'm still fascinated by it. It all comes up on a screen on the dash and you can customise and view loads of stuff on the car like how the doors lock, how the engine is doing, how far you can get on the fuel you have, lights, how the wing mirrors fold in everything and I love it. You can also turn off both the VSD and TRC systems through this computer and I love it. The car is also keyless.

Storage is pretty well catered for, storage boxes behind the seats, big glove box, massive boot for a car with a roof that folds in, and door pockets.

So to sum up, I definately wouldnt classify this car as a sports car, you wouldnt want to take it on a track, and its just pretty boring and comfortable. I'm a 20 year old and I'm still getting my fix of sport and speed. This car would be better for someone that has got their fix of sports cars and wants a 2 seater convertable that is confortable to drive. I'd love to try it with one of their big V6 petrol engines though, possibly lowered with stiffened suspension and larger wheels which I'm sure would really improve the experience.

Ok I got it back now and I've got to say I'm very pleased with the body work, they replaced the whole bumper, wing, light, grills, bonnet etc. It looks better than it did before the crash so nothing wrong there.

I'm so glad to have it back, been out driving it all evening, however.....

The clutch feels totally different to how it used to, the gearbox feels different, and my god this rain that were having has taught me that I seriously need some new tyres and brake disk/pads.

So you reckon they would have played with the clutch or gearbox during the repairs? Or have I just got too used to the alfa so I'm having to re-adjust back to the celica?

All I can say is niggles aside, Its damn good to be behind the wheel again.

Your car will always feel weird when youve been driving another for a prolonged period of time. Mine always feels odd when I get back into it after a period of time driving something else.

Yup, figures, it will always feel different to how you remember it. Soon goes away :)

I loved getting back in mine after the Corsa. Felt totally weird and I scared myself to death with 2nd gear. Fell in love with it again :D
