Just dropped a deposit on some M Power - Trackday Project Car

I found Pilot Sport 2 on my last Evo IX to be good but far too soft, I would expect the same if I could get them in 225/45/17 which I'm not sure I can. I'm pretty set on AD08R or A1-R next though to try.

PS2 is an old tyre, they really have had their use from them.

On my 911 I had Pzero, PS2, Pzero Corsa, Michelin cup, MPSS. Dry track time best was on Pzero Corsa, very stiff, made car ultra direct but car was no faster than it was on cups which rode nicer and were far better in the wet once warm which with Michelins is always easy to do as they just seem to take heat better than other tyre brands I have tried.

MPSS were miles ahead though as an all rounder, not quite the dry lap time but they survived 10 track days and 10,000 road miles, whereas the PS2 were looking only good for 4-5 track days and half the road miles and all the other tyres lasted even less.

On my EVO it for sure was truly at home on AD08's, the car loved those tyres, but it needed them because on any other tyre it felt numb.

MPSS are stiffer than PS2 and have more grip in all conditions and last twice as long but if your goal is simply lap times try Bridgestone RA11 I think it is called, super sticky and stiff tyre I believe, but if the car is driven on the road then surely you want it enjoyable on the road as well or is your aim simply lap times?

Sorry, I meant Pilot Sport Cup 2's not Pilot Sport 2's.

Fair enough, different cars like different tyres, on my EVO X putting AD08 on it transformed the enjoyment the car gave.

Whereas Porsche, BMW and Mustang, all RWD I note absolutely drive lovely on Michelins.

Yes I am immature, a big kid, killed several children on the way to work and probably upset the entire neighbourhood but oh well, life is about having fun. :D

Oh and guess which plonker left the SMG in AUTO to start with, yep me, hence why the fun was killed as it changed to 2nd. :D

There's loads of skid marks at my local Morrisons. I always see S14's etc down there on an evening.

Playing in closed car parks is illegal and really comes down to whether they are private and if you have permission and if they are public what kind of mood the local plod is in.

If that means I can go up and play without getting in trouble I will.. :D

Some skinhead in a Scooby being a yobbo will probably cause alarm. :p

Probably best not too hehe just go find a big car park somewhere, there has gotta be some nice big car parks in the midlands somewhere?

Hi there

Not done a huge amount to the car apart from break it. :D

Anyway, good fun at Curborough with Kosta and other guys:

Car did very well for a small tight circuit, grip in the wet was superb, though I left the KW's in the road soft settings for the whole day, once things dried out it car felt great but could have done with the KW's stiffening up a bit for dry to keep car flatter and give more grip. But it felt great, though on corner exits some time I got a knock from the rear, which Clarkey things could be diff/subframe related. But as it did not do it in road driving, kind of just ignored it as a typical E46 characteristic.

So we move to this weekend, I decided to fit some of the nicer euro polished tips, not the easiest job as stock items are riveted on, so got them off and eventually riveted new ones back on:

The clunk I experienced at Curborough has got worse, but it seemed to happen the same time as I had an exhaust leak fixed/welded (exhaust removed) but now I believe this is just coincidence and then to make matters worse yesterday I had a dumb ass moment and reversed into a van, hitting the toeing eye, car went with a bang, I though "Oh ****", got out, bumper hanging off and a huge mark/scrape on the bumper. :(

Fortunately the bumper had just come of its runner which was still intact, not broke, so removed and re-fitted bumper, quite easy on E46, but the car still had a big nasty mark on the bumper. :(

Then I remember Ben on these very forums recently started his own mechanics business and detailing business (Lawtomotive) and was local in Stafford, he said bring it down and he'd see if it would polish out, and what a gent, the mark is now 95% gone, cannot be seen unless I point it out, I took no before picture but here is how the bumper now looks after the minor fender bender. ;)

I was amazed, so much so I have agreed to allow Ben to properly detail and polish the paint on the car in May, I know its a road / track car but hey it can look good and super shiny too. ;)

Also I told him how my car was not clunking even when just pulling away sharply or on uphill, he got it had a listen and we agreed it was either exhaust touching or something in the drivetrain (diff or subframe). So he agreed to put it on his ramp and we went about making sure the exhaust could not touch anywhere, we found some collapsed heatshield and the fuel filler hose was lose in the rear too and indeed afterwards the car is quieter, but the creak/clunk still present.

When I got home I did a test, foot on brake, attempt to pull of in 1st for a split second, then reverse, then first and the car made the same exact sound, just not as loud. As such we believe a bolt could be lose, most likely front diff bush bolt or the bush is perished allowing excessive diff movement, alternatively something else in rear is moving. He has agreed that I can put car back on ramp, he charges something like a crazy £10-£11 per hour to use his ramp and tools, plus he is there to help, cannot beat that. We can get it in the air, foot on brake and do the same in the air with a person underneath to try and locate exactly the source of the clunk. :)

Shall probably do this tomorrow as I saw today would be nice, so the Mustang came out. :D

But huge thanks to Ben at Lawtomotive for his detailing skill and use of his ramp/tools. Top bloke! :)

Hi there

Never realised I did not update this, but the clunk was fixed, car had a brand new E60 M5 LSD and was fully rebuilt, problem fixed. :)

These arrived today:

alcon.jpg

Car is getting some love over next few weeks:-

- New Alcon disc fitted
- Calipers serviced and re-painted yellow with black Alcon logos
- Rear shoe / handbrake delete
- CSL (Geoff Steel) carbon roof fitted
- New carbon vented wings fitted
- Full re-spray in original colour including wings painted, roof shall be left with the carbon on display
- Inspection II service by Ti Motorsport
- Compression check and if needed new head gasket (doubtful as car is a rocket ship and made 368HP on recent dyno)
- Wheel refurb in silver by Lawtomotive
- Corner weight and alignment check.

End goal, fresh brakes all round, full serviced, fresh looking, driving better than new and weighing sub 1300kg.

Hope to have it all done by end of October, roof fitting is booked for 2nd October and takes couple of days. Respray later that month.

What brake pads do you run on this, Pagid RS29?

XP10 front and XP8 rear, carbotech. Excellent bite from cold, no squealing, friendly to the disc and amazing stopping power, up there with RS29 but without the noise. The only downside they are dusty and the dust over time bites into the wheels/paint.

Nothing too exciting, but the new wings arrived today (picture attached), pretty much identical to stock but I went for the vented ones which have a lower discreet vent which is functional to help prevent lift. They weigh less than 1kg each and being made from fibre glass or whatever you call it won't rust again. Seen other cars with them and fitment is spot on. Car is booked in at bodyshop late October which is when these shall be fitted and the car given a full respray to bring the bodywork back to showroom quality. The CSL carbon roof gets fitted start of October and I shall try to get the wheels and calipers refurbed before the car is due into the bodyshop.

The guy painting it has said minimum of two weeks due to the high standard I want it doing too which is fine by me as its a second car and I want the job done right. Hopefully come December in time for the salty roads she will be looking new again, shortly afterwards I shall get the car booked in at Autobrite for any paint correction (probably not required due to fresh paint) and to have the car waxed/sealed by those guys to keep it looking fresh and protected.

In the meantime the guy who sold me the CWP for mine, is now competing in the Kumho championship with his car which he has now essentially turned into a full race car, though his car is still road legal I believe. In short he is doing very well with several wins and podiums, quick video from Donnington:

Keep an eye on his rear view mirror at 2:00 :(

Still his best lap 1:13, which is absolutely flying, bear in mind no superchargers or turbos, car is probably circa 400HP and runs the Kumho specified tyre.

Hi there

Well its being a long time in the planning and Geoff Steel has had it ready for me for sometime, but with them off racing and me taking holidays, we've really struggled to find a time when we were both free and I really wanted Geoff Steel to fit it simply because they have already done so many with good results, as in they don't leak!

So I arrived Geoff Steel 9am Monday, inspected the roof and was over the moon with the quality, in short it looked every bit as good as I remember my CSL roof. It was ordered in CSL weave and I requested they did not emboss their logo, which they were fine with. They also informed me this is the first roof from a new mould, as they felt the old one was getting a little tired and the last few race cars they built for themselves (oh my they have so many) were a touch dull. As such they were also over the moon when they pulled it from the mould, as the finish was exceptional.

Here is a few photos from the install process but in short it goes like this:

- Remove front and rear windscreens (Geoff Steel use Nationwide auto glass for this as they know the local guy)
- Drill spot welds
- remove old roof, pry bar for some persuasion
- Old roof in skip
- Clean the area and spray with primer and leave to dry.
- Apply tiger seal all the way round and also to the roof bar (absolute must which not all M3's have, mine did, but Geoff Steel also stock them)
- Put roof on, bolt it down at the 4 points and use clamps front and rear to ensure bond and leave to dry.
- Re-install windscreens, again done by Nationwide ensuring plenty of the sticky stuff goes in the corners.
- Leave ideally for 12-24hr to drive.
- I also had them fit the streamline aero vented wings I had, mine had rusted badly, went with these due to weight savings and functional down force (not yet enabled)

After an overnight stay in a local Inn, I collected the car this morning in the bright sunlight, the guys had given the car a quick was over and applied a quick polish, once I got home I added some sealant and wax to protect the roof from the elements and UV.

Wash test done, no leaks detected and needless to say I am over the moon, the quality is spot on, hoping it holds up over time but other owners with the GS roof seem to be doing just fine and the ones on their race cars which have being on a few years seemed fine to me, just a touch duller which is more down to the older mould and them not being waxed/protected the same, being full on race cars.

As to can I feel a difference? In 6th gear on the motorway, acceleration 70mph plus definetely feels stronger, it was always strong anyway due to the 3.91 differential and lack of weight but now the thing really just bolts off even in 6th, could easily accelerate fast in 6th from 80mph upto 180mph with relative ease. My favourite roundabouts, there just seems a touch more outright grip if anything, beyond limit can't say but car just seems to hold on better and its not lost any progression, even better.

The Streamline Aero Design wings really fit great, please bear in mind in the photos nothing has being done to them, of course I shall get my bodyshop guy to perfect them (machining where required) but they fit like OEM and do just fit, once they have being worked on by bodyshop and painted they will look fine.
The vent is functional down force if you open the arch liner, right now I have decided against this simply due to filled the inside of the wings with rocks, mud, water which would no doubt create rust and as my car with the wings off showed no signs of rust and was remarkably clean we shall keep them closed until we can find a solution to channel the air and protect the paint effectively, so a duct with mesh of some sort.

The car is booked in end of this month for a full respray in the original colour, I also plan to refurb the wheels in silver and have the brake calipers also refurbed and painted in yellow as they are looking a bit battered.

All is left then is trying to find a lighter exhaust that retains the 4 tail pipes but also maintains the stock raspy sound, which is the issue they are all either louder or single exit solutions. Apart from that is just to keep enjoying the car on the road, track days and drag racing. :)

Oh and for the E46 M3 boys, Geoff Steel showed me their yet to be released revised air box, key points are:
- Much nicer finish
- Trumpets are carbon
- It now is produced from a CNC manufactured mould, is more rigid,
- aluminium CNC flanges where the airbox meets the snorkel

It will be available in a couple of weeks and will cost £1400 I think Will said at Geoff Steel, not cheap but still cheaper than other options and now the quality is up there with the others and its a well proven solution which sounds freaking awesome, I love mine!
Couple of pictures:

I've gotta say the guys at Geoff Steel are experts and the service is superb, they even gave me a courtesy car to get too and from my hotel and the level of knowledge and solutions available for all BMW's is fantastic and back to the main subject I absolutely love the roof, it looks every bit as good as the roof on my CSL, well better actually as my CSL unfortunately had some lacquer issues which could not be fixed due to previous owner not cleaning of bird poop in good time. But to anyone who doubts the quality of the GS roof, this new mould its right up there, if your still unsure then anyone is welcome to come see my M3 and the roof, its a road legal daily and I do attend to the odd meet/show, so go take a look. :)

She should be tipping the scales now at just under 1300kg, once painted, car shall be re-corner weighted and checked. :)

Need to get that on the ring. Will be a proper beast now. Must be hard to drive other cars after being in that!

Yes its in its own little world, better than my 911 was, even in the wet, dry is a different ball game, its fantastic, unless its a really nasty bumpy road full of holes.
Will never go the ring, not for me, will probably visit Spa in it though in future along with other UK tracks and I quite enjoy taking it drag racing too. :D

Gibbo, be nice to see some vids of you out in it :)

I generally do not film much, I've even got a GoPro hero thing I've never taken out the box, really need to set it up on the cage to film from inside, the most recent was from the recent OcUK track day which I posted a few pages back which was filmed by someone else. :)

Will look at getting my GoPro installed and I am not definitely not filming myself on the road, I don't like prison food. ;)

So you got a shorter ratio diff? Or 6th gear is stronger for a few kg of weight saving ?

Car got a shorter diff ratio a while back, 3.91 so 6th now tops out around 185mph which is actual top speed, hence why it accelerates so well even in 6th, but saving 20-30kg is hard to detect, but of course in top gear it just seems more eager for the less weight, which I guess makes sense, hardly gonna feel it in lower gears because of how quick it already is. The diff ratio was one of the best upgrades on the car, more noticeable than the remap as power everywhere, but when combined with more power and less weight its just transformed the car.
