Just gave blood again, do you?

I can't give blood anyway but if I could I'm not sure I could. I have a fear too, and it's not even a semi rational one like blood or needles. It's having my forearms squeezed or injected or anything else. I have no idea where it came from but I just can't do anything. The thought makes me shiver.

I wouldn't care if they shoved the needle in my eyeball, wherever. Just not there. I've had snakecams miles up my nose and down into my throat, I've had all sorts. But the forearms...

:(

Just back from the donation mobile, I was actually surprised they took mine as I had acupuncture last week. But as it was on the NHS it was OK.

Thats 3 now, 2 more and I get a certificate XD

Seriously, that's very rare. But yes, a bad needle placement is usually the cause. Unless you bent your elbow at some point after the needle went in. I fainted and got a huge bruise like that about the fifth time i gave whole blood. The doctor (it was a doctor putting in needles back in 1992) was a rank incompetent. I'd suggest another try, but it's obviously up to you.

I think if I'd known that it was a possibility, I would have been able to handle it better. As it was, I believed all the "you hardly notice it" "it feels like a scratch" stuff and just wasn't prepared for anything like that level of discomfort. I'd quite like to try again, but feel pretty negatively about it all, and am concerned the problem might be my anatomy rather than the nurse's technique, which would mean it happens again.

Up until probably the mid 90s I got to my Platinum card which meant 50 times but a few years later the factory stopped the vans coming on site and we were told that we had to give in our own time which wasn't easy because of the distances involved.
Roll on a few years and I wanted to start again but was told (by somebody) that I couldn't donate because of my diabetes.
Anyway, when I'm at my Mums I've noticed the vans at the Church opposite so I just called in and according to the Nurse I can donate and I'm going back at 5:25pm :)

Funny thing, my missus works at NBS taking blood and she and most of the staff never give blood.

I give blood dont either, as my blood is not fit for human consumption! :D

My next donation is my 10th. I enjoy giving blood, good to know it's helping save lives. Might look into donating platelets, think I have to travel to Leeds for that though :(

Haven't posted in the thread for a while but I've continued to donate platelets every 4-5 weeks. Mid donation at the moment, will be here for 90 minutes in total (triple donation). Free WiFi, tea and toast.... It's a hard life! Just a wee reminder for those that are able and that want to donate blood but have let it slip their mind... Don't forget to go in again when you can :)

Glad you're keeping it up. I had a new mistake last time I went (Thursday last week): half an hour into the donation the alarm on the Trima went off, saying that there weren't enough platelets in the bag. Actually, there weren't any: the person starting up had forgotten to undo the clamp which stops platelets going to the bag, so everything was stuck in the centrifuge. I managed to finish the donation with an extra fifteen minutes or so added to the end, but for about ten minutes it was almost constant return as the machine emptied the bulging centrifuge. Not as worrying as having the centrifuge spring a leak and watching my blood pour out from under the Trima and across the floor (which happened a few years ago), but still livening up the afternoon.

That was 551 I think.

I've never donated blood, not something I have thought about.

I cut myself at work 2 months ago, a slice just above my finger nail, and the fella giving first aid said to hold it for 30 seconds, I thought he was taking the mick, so I said "Wha?", "Like after giving blood" he replied, I said I've never given blood, and the look on his face like I had just murdered someone, then he said "You need to give blood".
