Just saw someone jump off the top of a 5 story car park.

True, however, risk a life to save a life.

Lol.

A child, innocent person trapped or something yeah maybe, but a person wanting to commit suicide? I certainly would not risk my life catching a suicidal person only to die catching them or whatever then later down the line they re-attempting suicide and probably succeeding.

Seems a bit pointless, harsh...but not worth it for suicidal people.

I wouldn't go the other side of the railings or into the water to save someone wishing to kill themselves - it's just not worth the risk. I certainly wouldn't try to catch someone falling from a great height! I have dragged someone out of the sea before, but I didn't need to go more than knee-deep to reach her.

Well after reading through this thread, There are some people in it who seem to be trying to act like Dr Gregory House because it's cool and awesome. Kinda sad if the perspective on the situation they have given is actually their really attitude.

Asim18, It's crap to see something like this, When I was in blackpool quite a few years ago now, I saw a lady get hit by a car, And it really shocked me. As I recall I sort of stopped feeling my arms and hands, I got like a travelling numb pins and needles in them from shoulder to finger tips in waves. Wierd right? And the most bewildering thing about the whole accident was that when the woman was taken away, the authorities put down newspaper in the road to soak up the blood. It sort of gave the whole situation a cold real world edge.

And as for catching the woman, Can anyone work out the speed of a falling woman?

If we use the average weight of 145lbs, I think who ever tried to catch the woman would possibly save her, but would recieve a deadly blow.

5 floors, 40ft, about 12m

A object falling a certain distance will be travelling at:

(2 x 9.8m/s x 12m)^1/2, or the square root of (2 x gravity x distance)

Which is (235.2m^2/s^2)^1/2, or 15.34m/s at the ground.

145lbs is 65.8kgs, which, travelling at 15.34m/s, is a kinetic energy of 7741 joules, or the equivalent to trying to catch a 160g cricket ball at 311.1m/s, or nearly 700mph, in the space of about a meter, vertically.

Not a nice thought, not a pretty sight. I sympathise Asim :(

that's so screwed up, recording a video when someone is dying or dead. This prove how screw up our society is. What happen to the respect the dead or dying?

I claculated an approximate speed and an approximate kinetic energy in post 215, using these assumptions and approximations:

Height of one storey - 8 feet
g - 9.8 ms^2
starting velocity - nil
Mass of woman - 60Kg
Effect of air resistance - nil

Very rough and clearly over-simplified (she wasn't falling in a vacuum, obviously), but it gives a roughly accurate figure of 18.8 metres per second, which is a little over 40mph.

If you get hit by a 60Kg mass at 40mph when you are against a very hard and unyielding surface, it is not going to turn out well for you.

Come to think of it, 8 feet is probably a bit low per storey, which would make the speed higher. But air resistance would make it lower. So I think 40mph is a reasonable approximation.

I was using the 7 storeys mentioned in the news report, hence my higher figures of 18.8m/s and 9720J. Also, I used a mass of 0.15Kg for the cricket ball in my example, hence the higher speed of slightly over 800mph.

But the relevant result in this context is the same - it's impossible to catch her, or anyone else in such circumstances. Maybe a baby, possibly, though I think the deceleration would probably kill them.

wow, I've never seen anyone die... I don't think I could ever actually do it... but anyway, as for doods taking pictures, to a certain extent theres nothing they could have done - catching is proved impossible, and the curiosity would be a killer if you walked away... mebe one should have run up stairs to get her, but realisticaly, probably none could have done aught... and if something like this is going to happen that may stay with you for the rest of your life, why not take a video (personally I wouldn't have, but I don't think it's really that terrible, considering they couldn't have done anything else).

Unfortunately this December just gone, I learned that dealing with the suicide of someone you know is very difficult. I walked into my garage to find that my dad had used a dogs choke chain, and attached it to the chain that held up my boxing bag...and hung himself. It would have been worse if he had shot himself - as he did own shotguns - but still the image has stuck with me. Never have I experienced emotion manifest itself in a physical form - I felt sick, and reality sort of becomes all distorted and strange (its difficult to explain).
Anywho, long story short - I have since learned that suicide is a very complex and difficult to understand phenomenon. It is different for everybody. Some people kill themselves and genuinely believe that they are doing other people a favour. Some people kill themselves thinking, only about themselves.
My thoughts are, that if someone is able to go over and above that basic instinct for survival, then they have to be seriously ill.

I feel very sorry for the friends and family of that poor girl. The questions they will be asking will be infinite.

Poorly articulated i know lol, but its late.

This, I could never watch my grandparents die, why would I want that memory but I would never leave my parents on their death bed because I am their child but watching and looking up at a random person on top of a car park, is just sick, "oh look" "I wonder what they are doing" "oh"

Personally I would not hang around, I would just get on with what I was doing, Why did Asim stop, did he get a text to go look at this person on top of car park? Who knows but this thread makes me sick.

I find it funny my youtube vid is in bad taste when Asim comes on a forum and splurtes info on a girl dieing. All we need is a vid and this is nothingtoxic.
