Just saw someone jump off the top of a 5 story car park.

The only thing I'm shocked by in this thread is the number of people who are surprised that people stood around and just recorded videos of it. Where do you think we live? Care-yMcCareVille? The world is a horrible place and humans are largely responsible except for natural disasters.

Calling 999 is the only thing you could do in that situation. You're not trained to talk her out of it. You're not trained to restrain her. Imagine if you'd have tried either and she'd managed to jump still? You'd be in an even worse state.

Seek professional counseling for yourself and your mother. This isn't something you need to be remembering every night, and that's coming from someone who's had a similar experience and went through weeks of cold sweats and lack of sleep.

A sane risk if there's a chance, yes. Trying to catch an adult after they've fallen 40 feet is futile and probably fatal. There is no way you could decelerate them within a couple of feet and even if you were Superman and therefore could do so, the deceleration would probably be enough to kill them anyway.

You sound like you know this to be actual fact. I would have thought that cushioning the blow would have greatly increased the chances of the jumper surviving.

For a test go get a friend to throw a bag of meat and bones weighing about 10 stone off a high rise and catch it, after you've left hosptial (if you're lucky) let us know how it went :P

Why does it matter if I know what they are going through? I think it's idiotic to go the suicide route (with some exceptions) so yes I would be hard on a friend or family member if they were trying to commit suicide.

wow, wow, and wow, I am in bewilderment as to how we manage to evolve with such ignorance in the world, unbelievable.

I'm shocked by the amount of people who think the OP should have tried to catch her - he'd have been up for a darwin award had he tried that. Trigonometry my arse- he's not bloody superman.

Maybe she landed on her head. Not much point checking vitals then. 40 feet onto concrete can easily do very obviously fatal damage.

Seen the I was bitten on discovery?
A bear bit of the face (including the frontal skull and eye sockets) of a guy and survived. People can survive huge injurys, you still check vitals.

I would still want to talk to a station, if the cops had a reason not to check vitals you will be quickly told. If they were meant to check them, then it brings it to light.

I don't think surviving is the correct term, considering he doesn't have a face. It's like Demetri Martin says, 'sort of' is a little phrase that can mean a whole lot, depending on where it's said. Such as "you're going to live... sort of..."

Ugh, that really is horrible, I feel for you OP.

Trying to catch her... really?

I was on the way back from Bath on the train on Friday, and it was delayed because somebody tried to jump in front of it. I will never understand the rationale behind suicide, but then I guess a somebody in my position wouldn't. I guess I should feel lucky.
