hi there,
i tried a little over clocking on my phenom x4 9850 and it wasnt too drastic,
but when it got unstable i went to nock the fsb down and booted it up and it freezes every few minutes and if i leave it, it will unfreeze and go back to normal
but then the same happens after another few minutes:mad:

ive tried putting all the settings on the bio back to normal but it still persists:mad:

any ideas of whats happening?

thanks

did u put all settings back to normal? or did u clear the cmos? maybe it will be worth clearing the cmos cause u might have missed a setting somewhere or maybe the bios has gotten confused a bit.

you have your system running without the battery in it???

it sounds like the problem was in the bios, it should have been cleared since you took the battery out.

did you look at the settings in the bios though?

did you clear the cmos also?

either of those will most likely fix your problems

only clear the cmos if yo are sure u have reset all the other settings in the bios back to default.

there is usually a jumper on the mb, with the pc turned off and unplugged at the wall, you move that jumper (a plastic cap) across to the next pin, leave it there for a few mins (i usually aim for 10-15 mins)

here is an image i found in google that will hopefully help you realise what a jumper is:

Cmos_Jumper.jpg

(note the CLR_CMOS written on the board, urs should say that too.

in this example you move the green cap left so that it covers the middle and left pin, instead of the right and middle pins.

after 10-15 mins move the jumper back to its original position and power it up.

You can also get to the BIOS with battery in and choose the "restore default settings" option or whatever it is called in your mobo version - don't forget to save when you exit.

yes with the plug out and the battery and switched the jumper over,
i havent really o/c the gfx only a minuscule amount on the ati catalyst and it didnt effect it but when i did a little on the cpu it started freezing

well just so we can be sure, set the gfx card to default clock, make sure that everything is set to stock clocks including cpu and ram.

ok so i checked the gfx cards and they are at default anyway,
i looked on cpu-z and my memory is at 400mhz-is this normal?(i thought they were suppose to be like 200mhz)
and cpu is at standard clocks

yeah 400 is right, 400x2 = 800mhz, should be ddr2-6400.

thinking since my last post, how puzzling it is that removing the battery had any effect at all while running the system....

i mean its supposed to supply 5V standby power, key word being standby, it shouldn't have any effect while the pc is powered...

any chance of installing this hardware monitor? http://www.cpuid.com/download/hwmonitor/HWMonitor_115_setup.exe and checking the voltages are ok?

that looks good, see how the numbers have minimums and maximums, if you let the hardware monitor run while the pc freezes and then unfreezes, maybe it will pick up on a voltage drop?

the fact that when you removed the battery it didnt freeze... its probably time to try and swap components, maybe replace the battery (although i dont expect that to fix it), and the mother board next, followed by psu. if u can borrow one from someone or somewhere else.
