Kerbal Space Program

Just came to post its entered experimental. Agreed wasn't expecting it so soon. However theres not much new to it. Its more an optimisation release.
Had too reinstall windows, so looking forward to the release as cant be bothered to start again before then.
 
Kerbal just entered experimentals so it shouldn't be too long till 0.23

It has indeed gone to experimental.
I have been playing 0.23 for 4 weeks straight, an still cant put it down, it's been that fun.
Some small changes, that improves the performance, an the play-ability of the game greatly...
It also makes Career harder. :D

Did you keep your craft design's, or did they get formatted too?
- Makes mental note; Must re-format HDD's + re-install Windows once 0.23 is released.
 
Well career mode makes a refreshing change.

Only done a Minimus landing and return so far but it is interesting how little you can get away with and still complete the trip.

With the normal mode I used to have lots of components on the ship because they were there, however having to make the most of very little makes me put more thought into the craft.
 
I love the career mode, working your way through the science tree unlocking parts. Only managed a couple of orbits as I haven't had chance to properly play it the last couple of weeks.

one of the best changes 0.23 makes is that you cant get all the science from making millions of transmissions any more, you have to get the rocket back to kerbin. I believe they said they had made a huge mobile lab that could get considerably more data from when you used transmissions though
 
oooo career mode is in, last time i landed on the moon and the 2 planets after that. might have to revisit now career mode is open

I realy hope 0.24 integrates remote tech. And starts career mode properly. Once you have remote tech, you can add prices and have meaningful missions. Launch unmanned probe, then later on launch a commercial satellite into geo stationery orbit etc.
its just science mode at the moment rather than career.
 
Well I truly messed up tonight. Decided to let Jebediah out to do a little space walk but I lost control and lost my ship. Jebediah ended up falling to Kerbin and was killed :(

Well, thats Moho ticked off the list. I really am back to Eve as the only place a kerbal hasn't gone and returned from. I suspect it'll be a while before that chestnut is cracked.
 
Finally today something clicked, able to get into a stable orbit easier, and just seemed to pick things up quicker (I know you're thinking how did it take so long!)

Anyways, after 2 Mun landing and 1 Minimus landing attempt....I bring you....

How in the hell do you land on these things? :( If I thrust up the engines to kill the descent speed I go back into the air, then come down again at the same speed! :(
 
It's a fine balance landing. The best way is to have a very low PE roughly over your landing site. Normally around 2-5k I try for but it depends on terrain. Once at PE burn like crazy retro grade so you stop your orbital speed, from there you should be falling almost straight down and then you just need to balance throttle and keep an eye on how fast you are decelerating. Shouldn't need to go full throttle when coming down to the surface, this is what causes people to shoot back off into space :)

Today will be the day, although I keep having to redesign ships as the save buttonis greyed out :(

yes sounds "easy" in text, but hard in real life. Dont worry took me AGES.

Helps having a nicely balanced and light ship.
 
Is it possible you have just too much power to control your landing? normally i find it reasonably easy to feather the throttle to get a reasonably safe landing (~10m/s at most).

also, i notice that your speed on those screenies is ~200m/s at the surface. Is that because you were going along the ground too fast, or were you descending too quickly in those shots. Is not the most fuel efficient way to do things, but i normally try to deal with my sideways motion as soon as i get into the planet's SoI so that i only have vertical motion to deal with if i'm on a planet without an atmosphere

I think I was doing a whole host of things wrong, I was basically approaching wrong looking back at it (Although, at 5am it seems right.. :D) and almost doing a plane landing in a lander, I was thinking 100m/s might be ok on Minimus and Mun due to gravity changes, but watches Scott Manley's videos and I think I have a bit more of an idea..!

Although, one of my cats made a lander today :D

Landings are just one of those things you have to keep trying at. Once you get the knack, it feels incredibly easy.

Remember to use those f5 and f9 keys.
 
I can imagine, I think I just started the process all wrong and it went worse from there!

Part of me wants to do a full launch to landing without quickoading, half of me wants Bill's ass on the Mun!
 
Personally, I have no problem with quickloading. It's a sandbox game, so the only rules are the ones you impose on yourself.

I'd suggest watching some Scott Manley videos, but you already mentioned you have.

I wasn't planning to land on the tail of a nuclear engine, but I had enough fuel left, so I thought why not.

ah, that would do it. 100m/s is not good anywhere. you really want to keep the speed as low as possible and go for a vertical landing if your craft allows it, no matter what the gravity is.

nice cat lander btw :D
 
Minmas is a little more difficult to get to, but getting into orbit and landing is much easier, so I would suggest practising there. Typically 6m/s or less will be OK. Something to watch out for is when landing make sure your nav ball isn't still set to orbit.
