Kerbal Space Program

I'm not sure what was going on last night, even symmetrical rockets were pulling of the side on takeoff and really unable to recover, must have tried so many time :(

Might stick to sandbox until I've "done more" then go back to career! I want to visit other planets & get docking!!

Ive experienced this, generally on very heavy rockets. Some tail fins sort this out. I thin k its to do with centre of mass and centre of thrust, but not sure where the ideal place for them to be is. Obviously lined up. But should one be lower than the other, or do they need to be kept as close together .

Launched a probe to duna, over built the launch stage so much, i only separated down to the probe just before touch down. It wasn't even designed to land, it was only going to do a fly by. Will have to try rebuilding and getting it back to kerbin, the new science makes transmitting data to useless. It needs balancing back the other way, need far more science equipment and time should play a part in it.

How do you actually get to Duna? Do you plot the course from Kerbin? or get a Kerbin escape and hit that first? As mentioned a few times, leaving Kerbin & its moons is something I want to do, but am not fully sure on how! :D

Minimus take 500 tonight though...

Watch one of the many guides.
And use http://ksp.olex.biz

But basically Get into a 100k stable orbit. Then zoom out so you can see kerbins orbit. Swivel the map around so the kerbin orbit line is straight up/down the screen. Remember to click on duna and target it, Zoom back in and place a node at about 5 on a clock. Then pull the pro grade tab until you intersect duna orbit.
These days i don't plan the angle i just get up there and play around till i get an encounter with manoeuvre nodes, far less fuel effecient but you don't have to wait ages on time acceleration,

Imagine there are videos showing clearly in laymans terms how to plan orbital encounters. If not I might have a go at one myself, a westcountry guide to flying rockets to other planets... :D

there's plenty on youtube.

Made it to duna and back with jeb. still haven't unlocked the big command pod.

due to unkowen fuel loads, I did wait for planetary alignment this time.

I'm not sure what they're planning re having to budget for your space programme, but as it stands career mode is too easy for someone who is experienced. I've almost maxed out the tech tree after 8 missions.

The problem is that kerbin, the mun and minmus all have biomes whereas the other planets dont. this means that the majority of the science can be gathered without venturing outside kerbin's SoI. since the journeys need so little delta-v you can make one big rocket and get multiple missions done at once, which will get a huge amount of science

Oh man... Just realised how much Vtol / uneven ships are going to be to fly now... With a combination of the centre of thrust/mass stuff you can change the throttle levels of different engines within the editor to compensate and make sure everything is nice and steady!

Example:
Engine on the right is full throttle set to 100% max throttle, the engine on the lighter side that is further out (so more leverage to it rotating off balance) is set to around 50% thrust. It flies straight!

Forgot how annoying landing on gily is ittakes ages due to lack of garbity and coming in at 8m/s tales so loooonnnngggh

And nice vtol, haven't played with much like that, havent opened up enough of the tech tree yet.

I'm just tooling about in sandbox at the moment. Will leave career this release probably having done it on .22 a lot.
Just made a plane taking advantage of the ability to tweak engine thrust limiters...

I've had worse flying planes :D

Hmm, approaching a big ball of bubblegum!

Slightly oversized lander this time, just experimenting with lifters & what they could load!

Touchdown! Minimus! Lets go check out the surfa.....oh, wait, yes, thats a solar panel blocking the hatch....! :(

Good god, ventured out to eeloo today. Poor kerbin is now stuck. Good God should have consulted a delta-v chart. I just massively "overbuilt" it, thinking that'll be more than enough. But oh no.

Not sure it will work with those legs. You'll just have to do a rescue mission!
Spent some time making a new SSTO, twin engine this time, load of science gear stuck to it too. Flies really nice (considering it's a heavy ssto) in atmosphere but not yet had a chance to test getting into orbit yet. Should have enough fuel though, has a comparable amount of fuel as my little one.

If it works as well as I hope I'll have to try and make it vtol too :D

I played with SSTO's last night, not sure the best way to add VTOL without increasing the weight & bulk by a silly degree...

I'll probably do it by cheating in the editor to some extent :p will look into it when home! There isn't quite an ideal set of parts for doing it at the moment, most of the engines are far too long for looking sleek when vertical unless your plane is massive, and the smaller ones just lack the thrust. So you end up needing to have engines on the side that rotate down (usually a recipe for disaster) or just overlap an engine with your body in the centre!

Good job on the minimus landing. Enough fuel to get home?

Tested the SSTO I built yesterday, didn't work as well as hoped. Needed more air intakes and once I add the bits needed for vtol it was a bit too heavy. Back to the drawing board on that one!
