Kerbal Space Program

Downloading the update now. Dont know what to expect :( I might try make a jet to get myself into orbit, then land. My first goal. Next will be a rocket to take a jet into orbit, then fly to the mun then back again and land.. If that is possible?

The engines don't work in high atmosphere, so you need rocket motors as well. Wings are very small, so don't lend themself to pig planes needed. It'll take you a fair while just to get off the runway and fly, let alone in orbit.

Best I've done is made it 3/4 of the way around the world, so very close to orbit, just not enough rocket fuel.

new moon thingy!!!!!!! Thats my life gone for another few weeks then. Apart from that its all looking pretty good, wasn't that bothered about the spaceplanes though.

Well here's the best i've come up with so far:

It takes off! Just. Before running out of fuel and landing in the ocean :D

i've managed to get to about 20km, but the jet engines cut out there. any liquid fuel rockets absolutely rape the spaceplane-type fuel storage, so can't get that much higher :p

this one flew pretty well

You need to mix it you need jet and rocket engines/fuel. I find after ~12km jet engines are pointless to inefficient, so need to start rocket motor up and then right click any jet engines and disable them.
Just need to seprate the jet/rocket fuel tanks or they will all drain into jet engines.

I've managed to get up to 24km in a vertical flight with a plane I've made. Drops out of the sky like a stone from there until it comes back to about 10km though.

Flies really nicely though. I'll double check whether it is working on just standard parts. If it is I'll upload it somewhere so people can have a look :)

really helpful, thanks. didn't know you could righclick to disable them :)

am i right in thinking you can do the same with the wheels to get them to tuck in as well?

This stuff is hard. Designing rockets is basically just an application of simple newtonian physics. Stuff comes out, rocket moves up. But with planes you have to consider so many things, thrust, drag, lift, weight, center of mass, where your control surfaces are, how balanced it is. At current you just don't have the tools to accurately do it, so it's just guesswork and luck :p Even then, you don't have the fine trim controls that you would in a real plane, so unless you want to be constantly fighting with the controls to travel in a straight line (or any specific direction for that matter) you have to do so much trial and error work to get everything in the right place.

I realize that sounds like a rant. But this is definitely fun :D

Also, i'm not entirely sure the 'click to disable engine' thing even works for me.

it was acting a bit strange for me at first; right click seemingly didn't do anything... all of a sudden, a box appeared with the option to toggle the engine (and its pair if it has one) at the bottom.

Hmm, it's probably related to the way the mouse moves the camera around then. That doesn't work in Wine, but toggling things in the interface does. Very peculiar.

2nd page?

Oh the board things, they don't seem to make a very strong wing.

Im guessing more will be made in time. The swept wings are very narrow. Certainly adds another level to the game... I wonder how well things will fly on other planets once they make them...

Oh yeah, I'm sure off that, can't wait for them to get the different intakes working as well.
And I want two command modules, one airplane, one rocket. So can do similar thing to white knight/spaceship one.

Anyone worked out what heading degrees you need for the new moon?
