Keyboard/Mouse Adapter Good or Bad.

I use a custom-built adapter and GIMX to play single player FPS with keyboard and mouse on my PS3. I wouldn't use it for multiplayer, but for single player I find it really adds to the immersion, since it forces you to sit square to the screen rather than allowing you to lie off to the side/whatever.

I cant wait for the new Xim to come out. I hate playing FPS games using a controller with a passion. Bring on the kb/mse so I can play Killzone Shadow Fall the proper way :D

I can't stand playing multiplayer FPS games with a controller, and completely disagree that it's easy to get used to using a gamepad after using mouse and keyboard for many years. I was a very competitive gamer in the Quake series of games and other FPS games in that era (Unreal, CS etc), whereas when using a controller I feel completely gimped and knocked back down to "average" aiming ability or worse. That's unlikely to change no matter how much I play with a pad to be honest (I gave it a good go).

That said, I also don't think it's right to try and hack using a mouse and keyboard on console games that don't explicitly allow it, frankly it's no different to cheating in fighting games by using a turbo function on an arcade stick. Mouse and keyboard clearly has a distinct advantage over pads. Microsoft famously did an experiment when developing Halo where they pit gamers using mouse and keyboard against those using a pad, the result unsurprisingly was that the experience was ruined for the pad users, that's allegedly why very few games since have ever natively supported mouse and keyboard on console (there have been one or two exceptions, on PS3 only I think).

There is now a XIM4 open "Beta" for people that have a XIM Edge. You can download a new firmware to turn your XIM Edge into a 'XIM4E'. There is a couple of extra devices required like a bluetooth dongle and USB hub but it seems to be working pretty well with the PS4 and XB1 games.

Looking forward to its final release.

Surely there's a way for the new consoles to detect the use of devices like these and just disable them, I'd even say the people who use them should be banned.

My guess is that even if they are detectable, the cost and effort simply isn't worth MS and Sony's time to pursue and overall usage has been very small to date. Microsoft have banned third-party accessories before and have launched legal action against third-party accessories although I'm sure that was driven by financial motives (i.e. substantial loss of licenses fees).

Hopefully this is something that changes because these devices are (mostly) about cheating in MP games for their users and I would personally prefer if they didn't exist.

Might be worth a question to Sony for those with a Twitter account? https://twitter.com/yosp (apologies not sure of the MS equivilent).

You obviously haven't read the thread.

These devices are designed to be undetectable, the console just sees them as a dualshock controller or xbox controller, etc.

They mimic them in everything so the console doesn't know the difference

I can't for the life of me get how people can play with a controller on ma or even high sensitivity lol I tried on about 4-5 and my god its all over the places, I try these small micro movements and I seem to aim for the sky, far beyond me the precision people get with a controller.

You just need to practice. Saying you have to use a keyboard + mouse in FPS games because you can't use a controller is just lazyness and a poor excuse for wanting to cheat to get around the fact you can't be bothered to learn how to play the game under the same rules as everybody else.

Been a Xim user for years.

99% of the negative opinions are from people who've never used one or seen one used.

They do give an accuracy advantage, but the vast majority of xim users are awful pc gamers and the xim confers such a small advantage you wouldn't know they're using one.

The small skilled minority of xim users are naturally better players and it is the decision making that let's us slaughter the masses of clueless noobs running around. We can do it with a controller too, in fact most of us had to at PS4 launch as we had no other choice.

there's a special place in hell reserved for people like you and people who look at the letters in the bag when playing scrabble, and try and short change fellow players on monopoly.

To add to my earlier post as a KB/M user on PS3, since I'd just re-read the thread. I'm amazed there are people defending their use in multiplayer, or claiming they don't give an advantage over controller.

I went from having to play Battlefield 3's storyline slowly, picking my way from cover to cover - to being able to sprint through the open obliterating everything. The accuracy increase might seem small if you're already a top-tier controller user and poor with KB/Mouse, but from a starting point of equal ability with each, anyone with these adapters would destroy anyone without.

I agree it gives an unfair advantage in multiplayer definately, but I prefer singleplayer experiences more so for me - as a PC gamer at heart - I can enjoy many games far more by using a kb and mse as this is what I feel comfortable with and have done for so long.

I just feel more at home with a kb and mse and can become more immersed in a game sat at a desk than with a controller on the sofa, in particular FPS games. Driving games are the exception where I prefer the controller.

At the mo I'm practically playing GTA V on PC :D and enjoy it so much more than with a controller.

driving games suit a controller 100%, they are a million times better than using a steering wheel also I have found.

I bought a steering wheel once, cost a lot of money but it wa just awful to use compared to a controller, I don't know why anyone would put themselves at such a huge disadvantage.

It's like the opposite of using XIM.

It's off-topic, but are you sure you played an actual driving game, and not some kind of crashing simulator? Using a proper steering wheel on a good driving game unlocks a level of play which is virtually unattainable with a controller, and should in no way hold you back.

Gran Turismo/Forza both demonstrate this well, as does (to a lesser extent) Shift and Shift 2, plus a handful of others.

ETA: I wouldn't say that it's a comparable situation though, as the games are designed to be used with a wheel, and the majority of the fast online players will use one.

I was using a £150+ steering wheel on ps3 with the latest gran turismo at the time.

The track we were racing was the american one with the downwards corkscrew and we were using rear wheel drive cars.

Using a pad was sooooooooooo much easier.
