cubase is a dying daw. stick with ableton :)

Cubase is dying? What makes you think that? Abelton is good for certian types of music particularly dance, hip-hop or anything sample/loop based, but cubase is better for more traditional composition.

Industry leaders such as Logic 8, and Pro-tools along with ableton live etc, wipe the floor cubase is dying unless they pull something out of there sleeve.

a lot of people are questionin whether to go back to protools after seeing what logic is now capable of.

Protools is grosly over-priced for what it is. I think it's days are numbered because stable DAW's can be had for a fraction of the price of a pro-tools system.

Haven't used Logic 8 but I know people are going for it in a big way. I used logic 5 but didn't find it particularly logical. Cubase is much simpler to use. I thought cubases position was the middle ground between logic and loop based apps like Ableton/Fruity/Reason.

Protools really isnt grossly overpriced at all, its unbelievably powerful compared to most daws, its boring and dull too look at but the potentials behind it are immense.

cubase for me is like a toy, it feels very rounded and basic, nothing captures me with it. I love logic 7/8 on the other hand i currently dont own 8 but will own very soon, ive done logic training and protools training so maybe this is why i love them so much?

Well yes, if you've trained with them then of course you will be more fond of that application that another. :)

I don't agree with your Cubase views though. I don't believe Cubase is at all dying and is still one of the best audio workstations today for its versitility. Although Ableton, Sonar, Garageband etc are all quite popular, i don't believe they come anywhere near Cubase for functionality.

On Mac, the de facto is Logic Pro. On Windows, it is Pro Tools. However, Cubase can't be far off Pro Tools for its use commercially. The reason Pro Tools is popular is because of the good hardware that is required to run it, whereas Cubase doesn't require anything like this. However, due to the popularity of the internet, one could argue that Cubase has become the de facto standard.

I'm not saying Cubase doesn't have its bad points because it certainly does, but overall i think a large amount of producers and musicians would suffer if the program ceased to exist.

Cubase is certainly not dying however with pro standard equipment being made at consumer prices home recording is becoming ever more affordable to the public, due to the rise in popularity more companies are pulling out the stops and challenging the Cubase crown so Cubase is certainly not dying but there is a lot more choice now.

I've yet to try Pro Tools but I've heard some very good things,

None of this helps Kreee with a piano sound though.

Doesn't Ableton have a set of standard VST instruments?

I'm not sure on Ableton. I know Cubase doesnt come with any piano VST instruments, but Reason does. Although not top notch, it is actually pretty decent. I've got a early demo somewhere on my computer i'll upload in about an hour. :)
