I killed my 3570k by trying to de-lid it with a razorblade :( make a couple of nics in the pcb, enough to see the copper beneeth the green stuff. Put it all back together and now when I turn the pc on, the fans spin, but nothing is displayed on the screen, and it doesnt boot into windows cos the fans never back down like they normally do in windows. So it looks like I broke it :(

So now, I'm obviously in the need of a new CPU (which I can confirm I will not be trying to de-lid). I bought the i5 3 years ago or so, because then, nothing was making use of more than 4 threads. Now, there are a few games that the i7 pulls ahead right? As I'm already going to have the shell out the £150 odd for nothing but my stupidity, I'm wondering if its worth the extra £100 to make it an upgrade?

Thoughs?

And yeah, I'm an idiot, you dont have to tell me...

Bad luck man :(

I'd look for a 2600k or 2700k. At least you can get the clocks without having to take the lid off....

I strongly doubt PCIE3 will be essential for your next gen GPU. It's not about the gen, that means pretty much nothing. All PCIE3 does over PCIE2 is extra bandwidth. And to use that bandwidth you have to be exceeding the limitations of PCIE2 and I have never seen that happen since it was launched.

One of the guys here ran 3Dmark Firestrike on his X58 Xeon rig yesterday and his two 970s scored a higher graphics score than my Titans. So it's pretty certain that it's not a limiting factor to him at least.

Maybe if you had four of the next gen GPUs to play with? then yeah, maybe you'd cause an issue.

Has anyone ever made a mess of the vice method for delidding?

I've heard plenty of tales of the razor method going wrong, yet people still favour it.

Unlucky, OP. At least it was an old CPU, though - you got 3 years out of it.

Get a used i7. You get them for around £150 now, I believe.

Bought some razor blades (proper shaving ones) for £2. Asked around if anyone had a vice I could borrow, but couldnt find one, so took my £2 blades to my £160 CPU instead of buying a £30 vice lol.

I'll probs buy a used 2600k as suggested, as its only about £15 more than a used 3570k. Used 3770ks are not cheap at all!

Those sorts of razor blades are very flexible, which is why you probably cut into the surface. I would rather have used a new, still slightly oily Stanley type blade.. Still, what's done is done and trust me, I've made a few booboos over the years :D

2600k is a fine chip and they're really starting to shine of late. More so now than when they were new. It should clock bloody well too, they're usually an easy 4.8ghz.

Yeah, it was super flexible. I read that a "utility blade" was too thick though, and a razor blade was the way to go

like you say, its done now. At least I'll have a new (older) toy to play with. estimated delivery is friday - monday. Dont really know what I'm going to do with the week. Might have to spend time with the mrs or some crap :S

3770k's aren't bad

most will manage 4.4ghz-4.5ghz without a delid

True my 3570k would do 4.4Ghz. It was a turd though and wanted all the volts in the world to get there though. would have cost me nearly twice the price to pick up a 3770k over the 2600k...

I'm happy with the 2600k. I'm still a little worried that PCIE-2 is gunna bite me in the ass in a couple of years, but we'll see.

If you end up buying a new motherboard to go with your CPU - it makes sense to get one that has PCI-E v3. Each new generation of GPU will further increase the bandwidth used. One day we'll see more than the 3-5% difference we see between PCI-E v2 and v3 with the current high end cards.

I wonder why people don't use floss. Surely it would be safer than a hammer/razor using floss as a saw?
Ive wondered about this too, perhaps some kind of solvent to soften the adhesive a bit, then cut through it with something like fishing line.

Yeah fishing line would be better. Don't want it minty now do we :D.

To be fair I would have thought it would work even without solvent. As soon as you get under a corner it should work fine.

If I had a cpu that's not soldered I'd try it.

Unless if anyone knows are the old school Intel core duos are soldered? I've got about 6 of them floating round so if happily sacrifice one for research. E8400/E5300to be precise.

Actually even if it is soldered it's only the glue on the ihs that matters isn't it? Obviously if it is soldered it will kill the chip but still proves theory.
